OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's tennis team completed its second 7-0 sweep of a team this season, shutting out the Jackrabbits of South Dakota at Hanscom Tennis Center Saturday night.
"All the women competed very hard against a good and improved South Dakota State team," said head coach Tom Lilly. "It was good for us to win all three doubles, as well as have our top two singles win in our only two, three-setters of the night. It was a great win for our team."
Creighton won all three doubles games, giving the Jays the doubles point and an early lead. Mary McMullan and Kelsey Schmidt defeated Bryna Nasenbeny and Megan McDougall 8-4 in the No. 2 doubles position, followed closely by Sarah Cadwallader and Leesa Cadwallader defeating Natalia Medina and Bethany Goeden 8-2 in the No. 3 doubles, giving the Jays the doubles point. Anna Kirshenbaum and Analese Snyder defeated Jenny Blackburne and Brooke Henry 8-7 in the No. 1 position. The match was tied 7-7, but because Creighton had already secured the doubles win, the two duo's played to eight.
Creighton continued its success in the singles matches, winning all six including pulling out three-set victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Kirshenbaum defeated Nasenbeny 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles spot, while Snyder was victorious over Blackburne 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.
Schmidt then defeated McDougall 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 3 singles position and Lauren Mastro won her only match of the day, defeating Henry 6-1, 6-0 in straight sets.
The Jays won the No. 5 and No. 6 singles, as McMullan defeated Medina 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 5 position and Sarah Cadwallader completed the overall sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Katie Elifson in the No. 6 spot.
Creighton now has a little break, as its next match is Wednesday, February 23, when they welcome Arkansas Little Rock to Omaha. That match is set to start at 12:30 p.m. Check into www.gocreighton.com for the latest information and match location.
