ARLINGTON, Texas - Creighton softball split a pair of games against Texas-Arlington at the UT Arlington Classic Saturday afternoon, falling 2-1 in eight innings in the opener, before using a come-from-behind effort to edge the Mavericks 3-2 in game two. Christa Ruf's three-run home run was the key blow in the comeback victory, while junior pitcher Kylie Hovinga picked up her second win of the weekend, tossing four innings of scoreless relief in the win.
In the opener, Creighton (6-3) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when the bottom third of the order put together three straight hits. Danai Martin started the streak with a one-out bunt single and moved to third when Jennifer Bohle followed with a single of her own. Martin then scored on a single off the bat of Ellen Homan and the Bluejays led 1-0.
The Mavericks (7-7) tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring the tying run on a two-out single. The Bluejays escaped the inning with the score still tied when, with the bases loaded, catcher Amy Baker picked the lead runner off of third base to end the inning.
In the eighth inning, the game used the international tie-break rule, placing a runner at second base to start the inning. Creighton failed to convert its scoring chance in the top of the eighth inning, but the Mavs did push a run across, despite having their first runner of the inning thrown out at home. Creighton cut down the lead runner for the second out of the inning on a grounder to second base. But with two outs and a runner on first base, the Mavs singled and then doubled to bring home the winning run.
Sammy Snygg (0-2) took the loss in relief for the Bluejays. The sophomore right-hander pitched the final inning and one third and didn't allow any hits until the final two hitters she faced. Becca Changstrom pitched the first 6.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits, five walks and six strikeouts.
Baker went 2-for-4 in the opener to account for two of the six Bluejay hits in defeat.
The Bluejays fell behind the Mavericks in game two, as the home team scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Mavs strung together four straight hits off of Bluejay starter Brittany Telecky, plating a pair of runs.
Kylie Hovinga entered the game in relief of Telecky in the fourth inning and worked around a lead off walk to keep the score 2-0 in favor of UTA.
The Jays did all of their damage in the sixth inning, as McKenna Setlik started the inning with a double. Setlik's pinch-runner Ashley Frutos moved to third on a passed ball and Brittanee Grove was hit by a pitch to put two runners on for Ruf. The Bluejay junior, who had one home run in her first two seasons at Creighton, connected for her second home run in as many days to put the Jays ahead 3-2.
With the 3-2 lead, Hovinga returned to the circle and after walking the first batter of the bottom of the sixth, she settled down to retire the next six UTA hitters to earn her second win in as many days.
Hovinga improved to 2-0 with four scoreless innings of relief. The left-hander allowed just two hits, walked two and struck out one in the victory. Telecky lasted three innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs, while striking out two in the no decision.
Creighton smacked nine hits in the win, as eight different Bluejays collected a base knock. Liz McKewon was 2-for-3 as the only Jay with more than one hit in the night cap.
The Bluejays will conclude play at the UT Arlington Classic on Sunday at noon, when they face Tulsa. The Jays lost to Tulsa 5-3 on Friday.
