AMES, Iowa - Iowa State took game one of Thursday's doubleheader 7-1 at the Southwest Athletic Complex, scoring four unearned runs in the win. The Bluejays collected six hits off of ISU ace Rachel Zabriskie, but stranded eight runners in the loss.
After the Bluejays stranded a pair of runners on base in the top of the first inning, the Cyclones plated three unearned runs in the bottom of the frame. All three runs scored on a two-out home run by Erica Miller. The towering fly ball just carried over the center field fence to put the home team up 3-0 after one inning.
Creighton cut into the Cyclone lead in the top of the third inning when Amy Baker lifted her conference-leading 10th home run of the year over the right center field fence and off the scoreboard to lead off the inning.
The Cyclones pulled away from the Bluejays with a four-run fifth inning, with all four runs crossing the plate with two outs. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, Bluejay starter Kylie Hovinga allowed five consecutive base hits, with four runs scoring to give the Cyclones a 7-1 advantage.
Hovinga (2-3) went the distance for the Bluejays, allowing 11 hits and three earned runs. The junior left-hander struck out two and walked one in the complete game loss.
Zabriskie improved to 10-6 with a complete game effort. ISU's career leader in strikeouts, fanned 10 and walked three in the win.
Ellen Homan and Liz McKewon each finished with two hits for the Bluejays in game one.
