Women's Tennis Wins a Battle With North Dakota

OMAHA, Neb. - For the fifth time in as many matches, the Creighton women's tennis team came out victorious. The win this time for the Jays (9-5) was a 5-2 win over the Fighting Sioux of the University of North Dakota (10-9). The match lasted three and a half hours, with the Jays earning the victory in the second to last match to finish.
Creighton started out by earning the point in doubles, with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Finishing first, sisters Sarah Cadwallader and Leesa Cadwallader teamed up to defeat Megan Sween and Hallie Welk at the No. 3 doubles 8-3. Mary McMullan and Kelsey Schmidt then secured the doubles point by defeating Stephanie Petsis and Stephanie Biehn 8-4 in No. 2 doubles. It marks the fifth win in a row for the partners. The Fighting Sioux did win the No. 1 doubles, as Callie Ronkowski and Erin Kappers pulled out a close 8-7 win over Anna Kirshenbaum and Analese Snyder.
The Jays carried the 1-0 lead going into the singles competition, looking to win their fifth straight match. The Fighting Sioux picked up their first point of the day when Biehn defeated Lauren Mastro 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 5 singles. It was the first time all season Mastro has played at the No. 5 spot. Finishing next was Sarah Cadwallader, putting the Jays back ahead 2-1 by defeating Sween 7-6, 6-3.
Evening things up again was North Dakota, as Kappers defeated Snyder 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles. The loss was the first in five matches for Snyder, as she was riding a four match singles and three match doubles streak. Creighton scored the next three points to give the Jays the automatic victory, as they reached four points first.
Mary McMullan picked up her 15th win of the season at the No. 4 singles, defeating Welk 6-3, 7-5 before Kirshenbaum gave the Jays the win at No. 1 singles. Kirshenbaum defeated Petsis 6-2, 7-6 to earn her 11th win of the season, winning for the second time in a row.
The final match of the day went to Schmidt, as she was the only Bluejay that was forced to play the three sets. Schmidt defeated Ronkowski 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 to pick up her 14th win of the season, her fifth in a row.
Creighton will be back in action on Sunday when they welcome a Missouri Valley Conference foe Bradley Braves to Omaha. The two teams will play at the Koch Family Tennis Center, as weather is forecasted to be sunny and warm. The two teams will start play at 10:00 am.
