PEORIA, Ill. - Creighton opened its Missouri Valley Conference season in style Saturday afternoon, defeating Bradley 11-3 in its first of two games at Laura Bradley Park. The Bluejays collected nine hits, including three for extra bases in the victory.
A Bradley error in the top of the third inning allowed Creighton to score an unearned run and take the lead, as Christa Ruf reached on a one-out error by Alex Chandler at shortstop. Ruf plated the first run of the game on an RBI single from Amy Baker.
The game remained 1-0 until Creighton put the game out of reach with four-run frames in both the fifth and sixth innings. Ruf led off the fifth inning with a double and scored on another Bradley error to give the Jays a 2-0 lead. After a single by Allie Mathewson and a walk to Baker, Alexis Cantu ripped a double down the right field line to plate two more Bluejay runs. The final run of the fifth scored on a sacrifice fly by Bri Lingl.
The four-run fifth inning was keyed by a two-run single from Baker and a two-run home run from Cantu to put the Bluejays ahead 9-0.
With a chance to end the game by the run-rule in the bottom of the sixth, Creighton surrendered three runs on a bases loaded single and error to continue the game.
