OMAHA, Neb. -- Alexis Cantu homered, scored three times and earned the win inside the circle with four innings of one-hit ball, as Creighton softball completed a doubleheader sweep of South Dakota with a 15-1 win at the CU Sports Complex Wednesday night. Creighton won the first game, 4-1, over the Coyotes, earlier on Wednesday.
Creighton (14-13) scored multiple runs in every inning against their regional rival, posting their most runs in a home game since a 20-3 romp over Saint Mary's to open the 2000 season.
The
host Bluejays wasted no time building a lead in game two against USD
starter Missy Blackburn. Ellen Homan walked and stole second, then scored on a
single up the middle
off the bat of Amy Baker. Walks to Cantu and Bri Lingl loaded the bases
before Blair Lowe ripped a two-run single to right to make it 3-0.
Baker
extended CU's lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the second inning, when she
ripped her fifth homer of the year deep down the left field line. It was
her 38th career
homer, moving her into second place in school history, and gave her 112
career RBI for sixth in program history.
Cantu
followed Baker's blast with a tape-measure shot that cleared both
fences, as well as the new scoreboard in right field. Her team-high
sixth homer of the year is
a program single-season record for a left-handed hitter.
Creighton
tacked on seven more runs in the third inning. Homan singled up the
middle to plate Liz Dike and Lowe and make it 8-0, before Homan scored
on Mathewson's RBI
single to stretch CU's lead to 9-0. Lingl joined the hit parade with a
two-run single to make it 11-0. Cantu came around to score on a
throwing error. USD left fielder Kate Snow then robbed Dike of a
potential grand slam, with a great catch at the wall that
would only go down as a sacrifice fly to score Lingl.
The
Jays scored twice in their final at-bat in the bottom of the fourth,
when pinch-hitter Brittnie Kreiser homered to dead-center over the 215
sign, for her first round-tripper
of the season.
Cantu
improved to 4-2 on the season, allowing just one hit and striking out
six in four innings of work. Sammy Snygg threw the final inning for the Jays.
Offensively,
Mathewson, Baker, Cantu and Lingl each had two hits, while Homan,
Baker, Kreiser, Lingl and Lowe had multiple RBI. CU finished with 13
hits, seven walks
and had one batter hit-by-pitch.
USD's Blackburn (3-8), who was tagged for six runs in 1.2 innings, suffered the loss.
Creighton remains at home when it hosts Indiana State in a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
