OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton's offense continues to impress as the Bluejays extended their winning streak to five games with a 12-4 run-rule victory over Indiana State in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader on a perfect afternoon at the CU Sports Complex. The Bluejays, who won the opener 9-0, scored all 12 of their runs in the bottom of the third inning, smacking nine hits off of three different Sycamore pitchers in the frame.
The pair of five-inning wins puts the Bluejays at 16-13 on the season and 5-3 in Missouri Valley Conference play, while the Sycamores dropped to 12-17 on the spring and 0-8 in Valley action. The Jays have already scored more runs through 29 games this spring, than they did all of last season.
The 12-run inning is tied for 19th in NCAA history for runs scored in a frame and it topped Creighton's previous high-scoring inning of the season, which had been an 11-run frame at Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the season-opener.
Before the Bluejays' bats exploded, the Sycamores took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning, taking advantage of a two-out error. A three-run home run by Olivia Andres was the key blow against CU starter Alexis Cantu.
The fun began in the bottom of the third, starting with a leadoff single from Christa Ruf. After Ellen Homan walked, Allie Mathewson moved both runners into scoring position with a sac bunt. Bri Lingl then singled through the left side to put the Jays on the board. After a walk to Cantu loaded the bases, ISU pulled starting pitcher Ashli scott in favor of ace and game one starter Lindsey Beisser.
Beisser faired no better against the Jays, as she was greeted with an RBI single by Amy Baker. Station-to-station ball continued with a pinch-hit RBI single by Brittnie Kreiser and the score was 4-3 in favor of the Sycamores. Blair Lowe followed with a bloop single to left field, again scoring just one to tie the game. ISU nearly recorded the second out of the inning on a great diving effort up the middle by Ashley Dickerson, but she could not get the ball out of her glove in time to get the force at second base and Creighton took the lead 5-4.
The bases were still loaded when Ruf came to bat for the second time in the inning and the senior unloaded a massive shot over the left field wall for her second home run of the year and Creighton's first grand slam since April 15, 2010. Homan then struck out for the second out of the inning, but the Jays still had some scoring left to do.
After Mathewson coaxed a walk from Beisser, her day was complete and the Sycamores turned to Kristen Felker as their third hurler of the inning. She was welcomed by Lingl's second single of the inning to put runners at the corners for Taylor Flodman. The Bluejay freshman had pinch-ran earlier in the frame, but this time she used her stick to launch her first career home run, a three-run shot over the left center field wall and the score ballooned to 12-4.
Cantu was pulled after the big inning as Brittany Telecky and Sammy Snygg combined for the last two innings pitched for the Jays. Cantu improved to 5-2 with the win, she allowed three hits, walked one and struck out four in three innings of work. All four runs scored against the Jays were unearned.
Beisser (5-10) took her second loss of the day as she allowed six runs on five hits while recording just one out in relief.
Ruf, who went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and four RBI in the third inning alone, finished the game 2-for-3. Freshmen Lingl and Dike each went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in the second game. For the day, Lingl went 4-for-5 with an RBI and four runs scored to move her MVC average to .609 with 11 RBI and 14 hits in eight conference contests. The freshman trio of Lingl (.412), Flodman (.409) and Mathewson (.398) currently have the top three averages on the team.
The Bluejays will look for the sweep of ISU on Sunday at noon.
