Nokels' Goal Delivers Bluejays' Second Double-Overtime Win

OMAHA, Neb. - For the second time in three weeks the Creighton women's soccer team delivered a game-winning goal in double overtime as senior Addison Nokels slammed home the clincher to seal the Bluejays' 2-1 (2OT) against Providence on Thursday, Oct. 2.
The win gave Creighton its first BIG EAST points of the season as the Bluejays moved to 9-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in conference action. Providence fell to 5-5-2 on the season and 1-2-0 in BIG EAST play.
With under four minutes remaining in the second overtime period, junior Kirstyn Corder fielded the ball at the edge of the box. Corder dribbled by two defenders, finding a patch of space and forcing Providence's keeper Kristyn Shea to commit two steps forward. Corder wisely shifted the ball to the right to a wide open Nokels for the game-winning goal.
It was Nokels' third goal of the season and gave Creighton its second double-overtime win this season.
Early in the match it was Providence getting the advantage as Allison Walton scored on a well-placed centering pass from Catherine Zimmerman in the 35th minute.
Creighton wasted little time answer as junior Alyssa Jara created an opportunity at 35:11 by drawing a Friar foul in the box. The result was a penalty kick that sophomore Ylenia Sachau easily put away to knot the contest at 1-1.
Nokels' heroics would not have been possible if not for the record breaking play of sophomore Danielle Rice. Her 14 saves set a new Morrison Stadium record for saves in a single game, while Shea nabbed one save.
Creighton finished with 12 shots, while Providence had 21 shots in the contest.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 5 as the Bluejays battle Seton Hall at 1 p.m.
