Omaha, Neb. - Junior Lauren Sullivan delivered her second multi-goal match of the season to push the Creighton women's soccer team to a 3-1 win on Sunday, Oct. 4.
The win elevated Creighton to 9-5-0 on the season and 1-2-0 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova fell to 1-11-0 overall and 0-3-0 in conference action. Sunday provided Creighton head coach Ross Paule with his first career BIG EAST victory.
A scoreless first half saw the Bluejays control possession, holding a 9-4 edge on shots.
The bulk of the action, though, came in the second half. Villanova struck first, scoring in the 55th minute. Amanda Vocelka fielded a pass from Christina Camassa on the left corner of the goal box. She weaved her way through three defenders to fire a goal past Creighton's Erin Scott from 10 yards out to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
Falling behind seemed to raise the level of play for the Bluejays as Creighton responded with three goals over the next 30 minutes.
Senior Jill Richgels and junior Lauren Sullivan got things turned in the Bluejays favor in the 62nd minute as the duo hooked up for the equalizer. Richgels put the play in motion by sending a pass to Sullivan at the top of the box. The Kansas City native controlled the ball with her head, then worked past a defender to the left corner. Battling one defender and Nova keeper, Emily Harris, Sullivan squeaked the ball into the far corner for her sixth goal of the season.
Just over six minutes later it was freshman Kaira Houser finding Sullivan again along the right side. This time she blasted a shot from 15 yards away for her second multi-goal match of the season.
The Bluejays final goal came in the 80th minute as Richgels sent a corner brilliantly to Darby Hugunin's head from three yards out.
The assist was Richgels 18th career helper, moving her into a tie for fifth place in Creighton history.
Creighton closed the match with a 19-13 edge in shots as well as a 12-4 advantage on corners.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 8 as the Bluejays battle Seton Hall in New Jersey at 6:00 pm.
