Softball Edges Georgetown 2-1 to Begin Road Swing

WASHINGTON – The Creighton softball team edged Georgetown 2-1 at the Hoyas' Guy Mason Field in the only game of the series on Sunday.
Weather and poor field conditions postponed two of the contests of the three-game set. Creighton (15-6, 2-2 BIG EAST) took advantage of a Georgetown (12-17, 2-2 BIG EAST) miscue to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. In the top of the sixth frame, sophomore Jen Daro's solo home run proved to be the difference in the game breaking a 1-1 tie to give CU the one-run victory.
Sophomore Sydnee Eck earned the starting nod for the Bluejays.
Creighton opened the scoring in the top of the first. Senior Liz Dike reached on a GU error with two outs and then stole second base. Junior Blake Ringle slapped a single to right center to score Dike and give the Bluejays a 1-0 lead.
After thee scoreless innings for the Jays, Georgetown knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth. The second Hoya batter was hit by a pitch with one out and later advanced to second on a passed ball. The next GU player in the box reached on a CU error to score an unearned run.
In the top of the sixth Daro's game-winning home run moved Creighton ahead for good. She recorded her second home run of the season with one out in the frame.
Eck improved to 6-1 on the year with the win. As a result, the Jays move into a two-way tie with the Hoyas for third place in the BIG EAST standings.
Creighton continues its East Coast road swing with a trio of games at Villanova prior to Easter weekend. First pitch for game one against the Wildcats is set for 2 p.m. CT on Wednesday in Philadelphia.
