Creighton (20-14, 5-8 BIG EAST) rallied in the top of the sixth to cut the DePaul (17-21, 8-3 BIG EAST) lead in half, but the Bluejays could not push across the tying run. The teams played evenly and were separated by one run, one hit and one error on the day. Four Jays registered a hit in the contest and the CU pitching staff combined for five strikeouts on Sunday.
The Bluejays continued to hold the Blue Demon bats in check by allowing five or fewer hits in the third straight contest this weekend. DePaul salvaged a win in the finale after Creighton swept the opening doubleheader on Saturday.
Junior Micaela Whitney earned the start in the circle for Creighton.
After a scoreless first inning, DePaul got on the board with the help of a CU error. As a result the Blue Demons jumped out to an early 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Sydnee Eck came on to pinch hit in the top of the third and then stayed in the game to pitch to the Blue Demons in the bottom of the frame.
Neither team scored over the next two innings before the Blue Demons added to their lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth to build a 2-0 advantage.
Creighton rallied with two outs in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Allie Reinhart doubled down the left field line as freshman Sam Crowley came into the game to run. Another double off the bat of junior Blake Ringle scored Crowley from second and cut the DePaul lead in half at 2-1.
Both teams were held scoreless the rest of the way.
Eck took the loss to drop to 9-6 this season.
Creighton finishes its six-game road swing at intrastate rival Nebraska on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT.
