Omaha, Neb. -- Junior Ylenia Sachau's goal in the 71st minute led Creighton Women's Soccer to a 1-0 win over South Dakota on Friday, Aug. 21 at Morrison Stadium in the regular-season opener for both teams.
Creighton (1-0-0) improved to 16-7-4 all-time in home opening matches, while the Bluejays moved to 9-0-0 all-time against the Coyotes.
Creighton outshot USD 6-4 in the first half and 5-3 in the second half, with Sachau's blast on a 25-yard free kick the difference. She easily beat a two-person wall from near the top of the box to beat keeper Parker Rytz in the top right of the net.
Bluejay freshman Erin Scott made three saves to earn the shutout in her debut. She became the first Creighton goalkeeper to record a clean sheet in her first collegiate start since Katie Jo Swanson did so on Sept. 13, 2009.
Creighton returns to action on Sunday, Aug. 23 as the Bluejays travel to Kansas City to battle Missouri-Kansas City at 3:00 pm.
