Kansas City, Mo. - Despite a strong effort by the Creighton women's soccer squad, two goals in the final 10 minutes by Missouri-Kansas City were too much as the Bluejays fell 2-1 to UMKC on Sunday, Aug. 23.
The loss evened Creighton's record on the season at 1-1-0, while Missouri-Kansas City improved to 2-0-0.
Junior Ylenia Sachau gave Creighton a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute of play (36:02), converting a penalty kick. While Sachau got credit for the goal, the play was set up by junior Lauren Sullivan getting taken down in the goal box to draw a foul.
That 1-0 lead held up through the end of the first half and well into the second period, but Missouri-Kansas City pulled even in the 82nd minute (81:47) by Nikki Lynch.
Moments later UMKC drew a penalty kick of its own as Kara Priest set up against Bluejay freshman keeper Erin Scott. The young Bluejay netminder made a fantastic diving stop to deny Priest. Sadly the rebound of Scott's effort went to the foot of Reighan Childers for the game-winning goal at 84:27.
"It's always tough to lose, no matter what, but when you have the chances to put the game away and you miss the opportunity its tough," said head coach Ross Paule. "On the PK Erin does a wonderful job making the save, but the lesson learned is we have to follow that up! We had our chances, we just have to be mentally sharper."
Missouri-Kansas City closed the game with a 17-11 lead in shots as well a 9-2 edge on corners created.
Scott closed the match with seven saves, while UMKC's Nina Tzianos had five saves.
Creighton returns to action on Friday, Aug. 28 as the Bluejay begin a string of four consecutive home contests at 5:00 pm against Northern Illinois.
