Bluejays will meet NC State on Sunday
ST. THOMAS, VIRGIN ISLANDS -- Coming off an emotional win over No. 9 Wisconsin on Tuesday, No. 22 Creighton erased any concerns of a letdown early with a 103-77 win over Washington State on Friday night in the final opening round game of the Paradise Jam. The Bluejays (3-0) never trailed in the contest, scoring 60 points in the first half of the lopsided win.
Cole Huff hit a three-pointer on CU's first possession and the Bluejays never looked back. The Jays streaked to leads of 12-4, 25-11 and 36-16 before settling for a 60-36 lead at the half. CU drained 10-of-15 three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes while putting up 60 in a half for the first time since doing so against Massachusetts last November in a tournament in Las Vegas.
Huff and Foster both scored 13 points in the first half, while Maurice Watson Jr. dished 10 assists in the first half.
The onslaught continued into the second half as CU took an 80-46 lead after a Tyler Clement lay-up with 13:34 to play. That would rank as the Bluejays largest lead of the evening.
Huff finished with a season-high 19 points, while Foster ended the evening with 16 points. Freshman center Justin Patton (10) also scored in double-figures, including a pair of dunks. Watson finished with 13 assists in 21 minutes of action, checking out with 15 minutes to play. His effort tied for fifth-most helpers in one game in school history, as he remained one of two players in the nation with nine or more assists in every game this season.
All 14 eligible Creighton players scored, including the first career points for freshmen Kobe Paras, Davion Mintz and Jordan Scurry.
The Bluejays made 15-of-27 three-pointers overall and shot 56.3 percent from the field on the evening. CU outrebounded WSU 39-33 and had 25 assists against just 16 turnovers. The win was Creighton's 26th in a row when scoring 100 or more points.
WSU was led by a career-high Conor Clifford, who made 12-of-16 shots from the floor en route to 29 points overall. Josh Hawkinson, who had 21 double-doubles last year, was limited to 10 points and eight rebounds. Washington State shot 46.9 percent from the field and 3-of-9 from three-point range.
With the win, Creighton advances to take on North Carolina State (3-0) on Sunday night at 7:30 pm Central in a game that will air on CBS Sports Network and can be heard on 1620 AM (KOZN) in Omaha.
