Eight-Run First Inning Propels Softball Past Providence In BIG EAST Opener

OMAHA, Neb. -- An eight-run first inning provided more than enough of a cushion for Creighton Softball in its 11-3 BIG EAST opening win over Providence. The game was shortened to five innings due to the league's run-rule.
Providence (12-13, 0-1 BIG EAST) was staked to an early 1-0 lead, as each of its first four batters reached against Bluejay ace Sydnee Eck. But Eck would settle down, striking out the final three batters to minimize the damage.
Creighton (16-10, 1-0 BIG EAST) took advantage in the home half of the first inning, tying a season-high with eight runs in the inning on five hits, two walks and two errors.
The rally started innocently enough with walks to Michelle Trulin and Kelsey Allender. Allie Reinhart sacrificed both women up a base before the heart of the CU order went to work. Jen Daro singled to center to score Allender, and Mileah McKelvy followed with a double to deep center to plate Allender and pinch-runner Sam Crowley. Blake Ringle then doubled to left-center to score pinch-runner Erin McGonigal. After an error and a foul out, Tash Coffiel singled to score pinch-runner Katie Pascuzzi. A two-out error prolonged the CU inning an loaded the bases before Allender doubled down the left-field line and clear the bases.
Providence added two runs in the third inning on Kelsi Luttrell's first homer of the year, but CU responded with one in the fourth on a seeing-eye single up the middle from Anna O'Gorman.
Creighton closed out the victory with three runs in the fifth to initiate the run-rule. A one-out walk to Allender preceded PC's fourth error of the day. Allender would score on a Daro single before O'Gorman ended the game with a bases-loaded single into the right-field corner.
Eck improved to 10-5 with a complete game victory, allowing four hits, three runs and one walk while striking out five. Blake Ringle led CU's offense with a 3-for-3 day, while Allender was 1-for-2 with two walks and drove in three. O'Gorman, Coffiel and Daro each had two hits, as well.
Taylor Huntly (4-7) was tagged with the loss after allowing five hits and eight runs (four earned) before being lifted with two outs in the first frame. Emma Lee paced the Friar offense with a 2-for-3 game, pushing her average to .493 on the year.
