Allie Reinhart goes 4--for-4 and drives in five runs
Creighton (17-10, 2-0 BIG EAST) scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings of the nightcap, including two in the first frame when Reinhart delivered her first home run of the year over the raised wall in centerfield.
After Providence (12-14, 0-2 BIG EAST) got one run back in the top of the second inning, Creighton blew the game open with a five-run outburst. A walk by Jessica Lewis and single from Tash Coffiel opened the inning, and both women moved up 60 feet on a wild pitch from PC starter Christina Ramirez. Lewis would score on a chopper back to the pitcher by Michelle Trulin that left everyone safe, making it 3-1. A one-out walk to Reinhart loaded the bases before Daro crushed her team-leading sixth homer of the spring, and the team's first grand slam since Liz Dike on April 28, 2015. That made it 7-1.
CU tacked on two more scores in the third inning. Walks to Coffiel and Trulin, followed by a passed ball, put runners in scoring position for Reinhart. She would deliver again, singling to center to plate both women.
Down by eight runs for the second straight game, Providence fought back in a big way. The Friars had their first four women reach against Bluejay starter Micaela Whitney, who gave way to Michal Hylton with the bases loaded and no outs in the fourth of a 9-2 game. Hylton set Danielle Deraney down on strikes for the first out, but each of the next three women would single to end her afternoon after just 14 pitches. Creighton head coach Brent Vigness turned to game one winner Sydnee Eck to protect a 9-6 lead. Eck struck out the first woman she faced before allowing a game-tying home run off the bat of Nicole Lundstrom, who had started the fourth-inning comeback with a walk.
With the score tied, PC turned to Megan McCune in relief for the second straight game. The Creighton offense would strike quickly to regain the momentum. Blake Ringle singled and pinch-runner Aujanae McCoy stole second. One out later McCoy hustled to third base on a passed ball on the final pitch of a walk to Lewis. Coffiel would once again come through, punching a single to left to plate McCoy. Trulin followed with a single that plated Lewis before a two-run single from Allender made it 13-9.
Neither team scored in the fifth inning before Providence gave the Bluejays one more scare. PC loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the sixth for Lundstrom, who had tied the game with a homer in her previous at-bat. Lundstrom could only manage a sacrifice fly this time around, Brittney Veler followed with another sac fly, making it 13-11 in favor of CU. A two-out single by Vanessa Portillo made it a one-run game, but Eck would get Julianne Rurka to fly out to second to end the threat.
The Jays added one more insurance run in their final at-bat of the afternoon when Reinhart collected her fourth hit of the game to score Trulin, making it 14-12.
Providence's last gasp in the seventh came up empty. A two-out error brought Providence star freshman Emma Lee and her league-high .479 batting average to the dish, but she flew out to left to end the game.
Eck (11-5) picked up her second win of the afternoon after allowing four runs (two earned) in 3.2 innings of work while striking out three. She leads the BIG EAST with 125 strikeouts, while her 11 victories in the circle are tied for the most in the league.
The Bluejay offense was led by Reinhart, who went 4-for-4 with five RBI, including her first homer of the year. She also walked once and scored twice while becoming the first Bluejay since Bri Lingl on April 5, 2014 with four hits in a game. Daro was 3-for-5 in the game, but her grand slam extended her team lead in RBI to 29, which is also tied for first in the BIG EAST. Coffiel also had a huge day at the bottom of the order, going 2-for-3 with a walk and scoring three times. Trulin was also a key part of the Bluejay attack, going 2-for-3 with two walks and four runs to become the first CU player in more than a year to score four times in a game.
PC was paced by Lundstrom, who was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBI. McCune was saddled with the setback, allowing five runs in three innings to fall to 3-2.
The teams have pushed back the start time for Thursday's series finale. First pitch is now scheduled for 1 pm Central at the CU Sports Complex.
