Creighton has 10-game win streak snapped
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska Baseball produced seven runs with two outs in an 8-2 win over visiting Creighton before 5,657 fans at Hawks Field on Tuesday, March 29th.
Nebraska won for the 14th time in 15 games, improving to 17-7 with the win. Creighton fell to 16-5 with the loss, snapping a 10-game win streak while tasting defeat for the first time since March 9th.
Steven Reveles was 3-for-4 for the Huskers, including an RBI double, while preseason All-American Ryan Bolt was 3-for-4 with two home runs, a walk and four RBI. It was the first multi-homer game of Boldt's career.
Connor Miller escaped the first inning unscathed after Boldt and Jake Placzek reached to start the game. He retired Ben Miller on a slow roller to second, struck out Scott Schreiber and then coaxed a flyout from Jake Meyers. MIller wasn't as fortunate in the second inning. After retiring the first two men he faced, Jake Schleppenbach walked and Reveles singled. Boldt then lined his third home run of the season into the bleachers in right-center to give the Cornhuskers a 3-0 lead.
Creighton got one run back in the top of the third inning, chasing NU starter Max Knutson. Knutson walked Kevin Connolly before falling behind 3-0 to Michael Emodi. Though Emodi would fly out, Knutson was replaced by Reece Eddins as CU returned to the top of the order. Daniel Woodrow doubled to left-center, and Connolly scampered home on a sac fly by Ryan Fitzgerald.
The Huskers added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, all with two outs, to extend their lead to 6-1. Reveles singled, ending Miller's night after a career-high 77 pitches. He gave way to Sam Norman. Norman walked the first two men he faced, then plunked Miller to force in a run. Ethan DeCaster would come on in relief and surrender a two-run single by Scott Schreiber before the inning ended.
Nebraska increased its lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning as Reveles roped a two-out double down the left-field line score Jesse Wilkening, and end DeCaster's night.
The Bluejays had a chance to cut into their deficit in the seventh inning after Bretty Muray and Harrison Crawford singled to open the frame, but Garett King buckled down to retire the next three men and preserve NU's 7-1 lead.
Nebraska added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on Bolt's second homer of the night, also on the first pitch of the at bat.
CU added a final run in the ninth inning against King when Matt Gandy singled up the middle to score Murray. Murray had three of Creighton's eight hits on the night.
Eddins improved to 3-1 with the win, while Miller fell to 0-1 with the loss. King earned his first save with four innings of relief.
NOTES: Daniel Woodrow was cut down stealing for the first time in 16 attempts this year, and the first time in his last 27 attempts dating to last year ... Sam Norman made his 11th appearance this season, and tied a season-high with 14 pitches thrown. The left-hander has still not allowed a hit this year ... Norman had allowed one earned run in his first 17 career appearances before surrendering three runs on Tuesday ... The eight runs by Nebraska were the most allowed by CU since allowing eight to Kansas State on March 9. That was also Creighton's last loss ... Nebraska was 8-for-15 with two outs on the night, while Creighton was 1-for-8.
