Jays fall at home for first time in 2016 after a 10-0 start
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Baseball saw its 10-game home win streak end with a 4-3 loss in 10 innings at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha on Friday, April 1st.
Jacksonville improved to 17-8, while Creighton dropped to 16-6.
Creighton took an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the second against Jacksonville starter, Michael Baumann. CU loaded the bases after a hit-by-pitch, error and bunt single, then went ahead on a two-run single to center by Kevin Connolly. After a sac bunt from Keith Oren, Matt Gandy would come home on a single to right by Daniel Woodrow.
The Dolphins mounted a comeback with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Austin Hays reached on a single and raced to third on Sam Armstrong's double to right. Both men scored on JJ Gould's double to left-center. Bluejay starter Rollie Lacy would bear down to get the next three men and preserve the one-run Bluejay lead.
Jacksonville mounted multiple rallies that Lacy turned away before finally chasing the Creighton ace in the seventh on a two-out single from Parker Perez that scored Nathan Koslowski. After an intentional walk to Hays, John Oltman came in from the bullpen to strike out Armstrong on a full-count offering as the score stayed 3-3.
JU left two men on in both the top of the eighth and ninth innings as the game went to the bottom of the ninth. Creighton couldn't take advantage of a single by Reagan Fowler to start the ninth inning, as a sacrifice bunt attempt resulted in Fowler being thrown out at second, and winning pitcher Kyle Arjona (2-0) retired Gandy and Kevin Connolly to send the game to extra's.
Creighton relief ace David Gerber walked pinch-hitter Chris Gau on four pitches to lead off the 10th inning, and pinch-runner Michael Babb advanced to second after a grounder for the second out. Babb would escape a rundown after being caught off second base, and two pitches later the visitors made CU pay, as Franco Guardascione singled through the right side to plate Babb with the eventual winning run.
Creighton had one final chance to tie the game in the bottom of the 10th against Jacksonville closer Mike Cassala, as pinch-hitter Brennan Hammer struck out but scampered to first on a wild pitch. But Woodrow would foul to the third baseman for the first out. Ryan Fitzgerald then lined to short, and on the play Gould threw away an attempt to double Hammer off first, allowing Hammer to move into scoring position. Hammer then gave way to pinch-runner Austin Groth, but it went for naught as Nicky Lopez grounded out to first to end the game.
Gerber allowed one run in 1.1 innings to fall to 0-1 on the season. The Bluejay offense managed just five hits on the night, with two coming from Woodrow.
Eight of Jacksonville's nine starters had at least one hit, and each of its first three hitters had a pair of hits. Baumann threw seven innings of four-hit ball, retiring the final 12 men he faced before giving way to the bullpen. The Jacksonville relief corps allowed just one hit in three innings, with Cassala picking up his seventh save of the season.
Game two of the series will resume on Saturday at 2 pm Central.
