Brett Murray plates Reagan Fowler with the game-winning run in the 9th inning
OMAHA, Neb. -- Brett Murray's one-out single in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Creighton Baseball team to a 4-3 walk-off victory over Nebraska in front of 6,880 fans at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha on Tuesday, April 12.
Murray's first walk-off hit of the season scored fellow senior Reagan Fowler from third base after he opened the inning with a double and moved to third on a ground out by Harrison Crawford. The triumph was Creighton's first walk-off victory over Nebraska since April 5, 2005, when Matt Daeges had an RBI double to give Creighton a win by an identical 4-3 score.
David Gerber (1-1) earned his first career win after throwing a scoreless ninth inning to give the Bluejays the chance for the victory. Max Knutson (0-1) picked up his first loss of the season after throwing the final 1.1 innings for the Huskers.
Tuesday's game was filled with drama throughout the night, as neither team led by more than one run during the tense battle.
Nebraska got on the board in the second inning when Luis Alvardo singled up the middle to plate Jake Meyers, who reached on a double.
Creighton answered in the fourth inning, as Daniel Woodrow tripled to break up Derek Burkamper's perfect game and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Fitzgerald.
The Huskers responded with one in the top of the fifth against Bluejay starter Austin Stroschein, who matched his season innings total with 4.2 innings of work. Stroschein was lifted after a pair of walks, and Steven Reveles greeted Creighton reliever Connor Miller with an RBI single to give Nebraska the 2-1 lead.
The Bluejays plated two in the sixth inning against Reece Eddins, who entered the game seventh nationally with a 1.04 ERA. Eddins retired the first man he faced before allowing hits to the next three men. Woodrow started the rally with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He moved to third on a single from Ryan Fitzgerald, and a single from Nicky Lopez tied the game. Fowler's single against former Millard South High School teammate Jeff Chestnut plated Fitzgerald and gave Creighton its first lead at 3-2.
The Huskers evened the score in the seventh inning as Meyers led off the frame with a triple to left-center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alvarado.
Neither team scored in the eighth inning before Gerber worked around a two-out single in the ninth, setting the stage for Creighton's victory.
Fowler doubled to left on the first pitch of the ninth inning, and after Crawford's ground out he would coast home on Murray's sharply hit single to right. The Bluejay bench emptied immediately, tackling Murray behind first base to celebrate the victory over its I-80 rival.
Woodrow and Fowler each had two hits to lead the Bluejay offense, and also combined to score three of the team's four runs. Stroschein starred in his first start at Creighton to set the stage for the bullpen trio of Miller, John Oltman and Gerber, as the Bluejay pitching staff allowed just six hits all night to NU's prolific offense.
Meyers and Alvarado each paced Nebraska with two hits each, with Alvarado also driving in a pair.
Creighton returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts South Dakota State in a game scheduled for 6:30 pm at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
