Pitching shines in third straight one-run win.
OMAHA, Neb. -- Sophomore Rollie Lacy threw eight innings of one-run ball, while senior David Gerber tossed a scoreless ninth inning for his eighth save as Creighton Baseball picked up a 2-1 victory over Butler on Friday, April 14th, at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
Creighton improved to 23-7 (3-1 BIG EAST) with its third straight one-run victory, while Butler dropped to 9-24 (1-3 BIG EAST).
Butler scored an unearned run in the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead before the Bluejays answered with one in the fourth and another in the fifth to forge ahead.
Lacy (6-1) picked up his BIG EAST-best sixth win with another sterling effort on the mound. He allowed just a single unearned run in eight innings of work along with five hits. He struck out six and did not allow a walk. Gerber pitched around a two-out single to close out the victory with a strikeout of Jordan Lucio.
Creighton played small ball to post its first run of the night. Senior Ryan Fitzgerald reached on a bunt single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nicky Lopez. The strategy paid off when senior Reagan Fowler doubled to right-center to knot the score at 1-1.
The Bluejays went ahead in the fifth frame when Kevin Connolly reached and advanced to second when a throw from Butler shortstop Michael Hartnagel sailed high and into the first base dugout. Catcher Keith Oren put men at the corners on a bunt single that didn't even draw a throw. The game-winning hit came two batters later as Fitzgerald doubled home Connolly.
Oren paced the Bluejay offense with a 3-for-3 night, while Fitzgerald finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
The teams resume their series on Saturday at 1 pm on a special afternoon, as Creighton's 1991 College World Series team will reunite and be honored throughout the game before entering the school's Athletics Hall of Fame in tomorrow evening.
