Butler vs. Creighton Series History: Bluejays lead, 5-1
The Bulldogs and Bluejays met for the first time two years ago as new foes in the BIG EAST Conference. Creighton took all three meetings in 2014 in TD Ameritrade Park Omaha and bested the Bulldogs twice last season.
Scouting the Bulldogs (2016: 9-23, 1-2 BIG EAST)
Butler opened the season with six consecutive losses and the Bulldogs find themselves in another rut with eight losses in their last nine game. The lone victory during that stretch came last Friday as the Bulldogs bested VIllanova, 11-6.
Just 3-16 on the road, Butler has struggled at the plate this season. The Bulldogs are hitting just .237 as a team, led by Tyler Houston (.319) and Michael Harnagel (.295).
On the bump Butler has a team ERA of
6.43, led by Sunday's projected starter Jeff Schank (3.53 in 51.0 innings).
Bamesberger Pitches Last, But Not Least
Senior Will Bamesberger earned the victory during Wednesday's game after tight-roping out of danger in the top of the 11th. Bamesberger entered the game with runners on the corners, no outs and one run already home for South Dakota State.
He walked the first batter to load the bases, but forced the next batter to ground out to third for a fielder's choice at home. The left-hander struck out the following batter looking and recorded the third out with a foul out to Ryan Fitzgerald, keeping the deficit at 5-4.
Â
Wednesday marked Bamesberger's longest outing of the season.
Bluejays Enjoy Walking Away
Creighton waited until the last at-bat to send the Bluejay crowd home happy during both midweek games. First, senior outfielder Brett Murray delivered a one-out single to right field on Tuesday night against Nebraska on Tuesday to give the Bluejays a 4-3 win, their first victory against the Huskers since 2013.
Â
Fellow senior Harrison Crawford propelled Creighton to its second consecutive walk-off victory with an RBI-single up the middle in the bottom of the 11th inning to drive in Reagan Fowler on Wednesday night against South Dakota State. The Bluejays trailed 5-4 entering the home half of the 11th before scoring two runs via a sacrifice fly and base hit.
Â
The last time Creighton posted two consecutive walk-off victories was May 3 and 4, 2014 against Seton Hall. The Bluejays defeated the Pirates 4-3 in 10 innings on a single by Brad McKewon on May 3 and 8-7 on a throwing error during the bottom of the 10th inning on May 4.
Stroschein & Ramirez Offer Reasons to Be Kept in Mind
Newcomers to the Creighotn pitching staff this season, Austin Stroschein and Ty Ramirez, each seized an opportunity to pitch during midweek contests.
Stroschein entered Tuesday's game with Nebraska with 4.2 innings over five appearances. Against the Huskers he doubled his season total, holding Nebraska to two runs on two hits in 4.2 innings.
Ramirez, meanwhile, took the mound for just the second time as a Bluejay on Wednesday against South Dakota State. The righty allowed just two runs (one earned) over 3.1 innings.
Ethan Claims Battle of DeCaster Brothers
Sophomore Ethan DeCaster and his brother, Henry DeCaster, each saw time on the mound for their respective teams during Wednesday's game.
Â
Henry, Ethan's younger brother, entered the game as South Dakota State's first relief pitcher. The left-hander pitched 2.0 innings and allowed three hits and one run.
Â
The right-handed Ethan toed the rubber to start the seventh for the Bluejays. The sophomore bested his younger brothers performance with two innings of hitless and scoreless relief.
