Whitney's No-Hitter Highlights Doubleheader Split For Softball at Seton Hall

Micaela Whitney struck out 11 and did not allow a walk or hit in Game 2 victory
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- A no-hitter by Micaela Whitney in Creighton Softball's 3-0 win at Seton Hall salvaged a doubleheader split with the Pirates after the hosts picked up a 4-3 win in the series opener earlier on Saturday.
Whitney (4-4) threw her second shutout of the week in the nightcap, shutting down a Seton Hall team that led the league in nearly every offensive category. She struck out 11, not allowing a hit or a walk, as just two runners reached all game. Seton Hall's only runners came after a hit-by-pitch of Alex Rabbets to lead off the second and a one-out error on a Valerie Suto chopper in the third before Whitney retired the final 14 women she faced.
The no-hitter by Whitney was the first by a Creighton pitcher since Whitney no-hit Pacific on Feb. 5, 2015 in her Bluejay debut.
"We needed to bounce back to have a chance to win the series, and she really stepped. up," said Brent Vigness of Whitney. "She hit a batter with one error, but it's a no-hitter. She had real good command of her pitches and attacked hitters and was very confident today. It was the best outing she's had in a Creighton uniform and she came up big with that performance."
Creighton got the only run it would need in game two in the top of the third inning. Tash Coffiel singled with one out and moved to second when Kelsey Allender followed with a single. One out later, Jen Daro walked to load the bases before a walk to Mileah McKelvy plated CU's first run.
The Bluejays their final two runs in the fourth inning. Aujanae McCoy tripled with one out and scored on Michelle Trulin's bunt single. Trulin would race home on Coffiel's first double of the season.
Game one was hotly contested, with neither team able to lead by more than one before the Pirates won a tense 4-3 decision.
Creighton scored the first run of the day when McKelvy drilled a 1-0 pitch out to dead center for the third home run of her freshman season. Seton Hall answered in the bottom of the second, as Suto capped a 10-pitch at bat with a single to score Rabbetts.
Creighton returned into the lead in the top of the third. Coffiel singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Coffiel scored on an RBI single from Allie Reinhart, giving CU a 2-1 lead.
Seton Hall reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Alexis Walkden singled on a 1-2 pitch with two outs and the bases loaded, scoring Suto and Ragen Reddick.
Creighton tied the game in the top of the sixth, another rally started by McKelvy. She singled and pinch-runner Sam Crowley moved to second on a wild pitch. Anna O'Gorman would then single as Crowley scored on an error by the Pirates second basemen, knotting the score for the third time at 3-3.
The game took an unusual turn in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Creighton filed a protest after Suto was seemingly retired for the second out on a routine grounder to McCoy at second. But Seton Hall successfully argued that Creighton had not correctly re-entered players it had subbed for in the top of the inning, and Suto was granted first base. That led to a prolonged, 16-minute discussion that led the a formal protest of the game being filed by 23rd-year Creighton head coach Brent Vigness. When the game finally did resume, Seton Hall would load the bases before Walkden was issued a run-scoring walk on a full-count pitch, as Suto came home for the eventual game-winning run.
The strange game took on another twist with a dramatic ending. With Creighton down to its last strike, Reinhart singled to prolong the game. Daro then clubbed one off the wall in centerfield, only to see the Pirates successfully execute an 8-4-2 relay to throw out pinch-runner Jessica Lewis at home for the game's final out.
Sydnee Eck (11-6) was the hard-luck loser for Creighton despite striking out 11 in six innings of work.
McKelvy led the CU offense with three hits and two RBI on the day, while Coffiel and Reinhart also added three hits each.
The doubleheader split left Creighton with a 19-12 mark on the season, and a 3-1 record in BIG EAST play. Seton Hall dropped to 19-17 on the year, 2-3 in BIG EAST contests.
The series is scheduled to conclude with the third game of the series at 11 am Central on Sunday.
