Pair of long balls aid Bluejay victory.
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Softball got home runs from Michelle Trulin and Allie Reinhart to post a 5-4 victory over Georgetown in game one of a three-game BIG EAST series at the CU Sports Complex on Saturday.
Creighton (20-12, 4-1 BIG EAST) generated its first runs of the afternoon in unlikely fashion, as Trulin pulled a 1-2 pitch over the right field fence for a quick 3-0 lead. It was the first home run in Trulin's 75 games as a Bluejay, and 186 games overall at the collegiate level.
Georgetown (7-24, 1-5 BIG EAST) answered with an RBI double in the top of the third inning from Samantha Giovanniello, trimming the CU lead to 3-1.
The Bluejays responded to return the lead to three runs in the home half of the third when Reinhart cranked her second home run of the season out to dead center.
CU added a run in the bottom of the fourth, aided by speedy Aujanae McCoy. McCoy reached on a bunt single and stole both second and third base. She would then score on an RBI groundout to third off the bat of Kelsey Allender.
Georgetown scored twice in the fifth inning to halve its deficit. The Hoyas led the frame with back-to-back singles by Theresa Kane and Mallory Bellknap before Sarah Bennett short-hopped the wall with an RBI single to plate both teammates.
The sixth inning was highlighted by a tremendous diving stab by CU second baseman McCoy to take a hit away from Taylor Henry. McCoy also starred at the plate, going 3-for-3 for her first three-hit game as a Bluejay. McCoy also scored twice and had a pair of stolen bases.
Bennett also delivered a two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh before Sydnee Eck retired Grace Appelbe to end the contest. Eck (12-6) needed just 119 pitches to author the complete game victory, allowing 10 hits and four runs. Eck struck out nine and did not allow a walk.
Giovanniello dropped to 6-16 with the loss, allowing five hits and five runs while walking six and also whiffing six.
Game two between the teams is scheduled to start at 2:25 pm, with live stats available at http://Creighton.StatBroadcast.com and free live video available at GoCreighton.com/watch.
