Provo, Utah -- The Creighton Baseball team suffered a 13-4 loss to BYU in the series opener between the two squads on Friday, April 22. The loss dropped Creighton to 25-9 on the season, while BYU moved to 28-7.
A highly anticipated battle between the NCAA leader in Earned Runs Allowed (ERA), Creighton, against one of the top hitting teams in the NCAA (BYU). On Friday the battle went to the Cougars as BYU scored four runs in the second inning and did not relent until BYU had built a 13-0 lead heading into the eighth inning.
Down to their final two at-bats the Bluejays got on the board with an RBI single from pinch-hitter Bryce Only that also broke up a no-hit bid by BYU starter, Michael Rucker. Only ripped a no doubt single through the right side. Daniel Woodrow followed with a two-run triple and Nicky Lopez continued the fun with an RBI single to plate the Bluejays' fourth run of the frame.
Bluejay starter Rollie Lacy suffered the loss (6-2), allowing four runs on four hits and three walks over 1.1 innings. Rucker earned the win (8-0) allowing four runs on two hits and four walks in 7.1 innings.
The Bluejays and Cougars will wrap up their three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 1:00 pm (CT).
