Emodi's Six RBI Day Helps Baseball Takes Down BYU, 10-2
4/23/2016 3:58:00 PM | Baseball
Provo, Utah -- Freshman Michael Emodi was a one-man wrecking crew on offense as the Creighton Baseball team played one of its best games of the season posting a 10-2 victory over BYU. Emodi finished the contest with six RBI, including a monstrous two-run blast to dead center in the sixth.
The victory evened the series with the Cougars and moved the Bluejays to 26-9 on the year, BYU fell to 28-8.
Although Emodi's day at the plate was one for the history books, the turning point in the game came on the mound in the bottom of the second. Down 1-0 with BYU runners on second and third, Creighton starter Jeff Albrecht worked his way out of the inning without allowing any further damage. Albrecht retired Cougar Jackson Kluff on strikes for the second out of the inning. After a walk loaded the bases, Albrecht got leadoff man Brennon Lund to hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
The score remained 1-0 until the top of the fourth, when Creighton plated three runs to seize control. Junior Bryce Only opened the third with a single to right. Two outs later junior Kevin Connolly reached on an infield single to put Bluejays on the corners. Connolly promptly stole second, then Emodi blistered a two-run single through the left side to put the Bluejays up 2-1. A single by junior Daniel Woodrow moved Emodi to second, then junior Nicky Lopez stroked an RBI to center to make it 3-1.
BYU got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, but the 3-2 margin did not last long. In the top of the sixth Riley Landuyt blasted a ball to center that was ruled an error. After moving to third on a sacrifice bunt, Emodi blasted a no doubt home run over the wall in straight away center. It was Emodi's first home run as a Bluejay, giving Creighton a 5-2 lead.
The Bluejay offense continued motor, adding five more runs in the final two frames. Emodi was responsible for RBI groundouts in both the eighth and ninth, while Woodrow delivered RBI singles in each frame. The final Creighton run was courtesy of an RBI single from Connolly.
Albrecht moved to 5-0 on the season, limiting BYU to two runs on four hits over six innings of work. The Creighton bullpen, John Oltman (7th) and David Gerber (8th & 9th), kept BYU at bay the rest of the way. Cougar starter Hayden Rogers fell to 4-1, allowing five runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Creighton and BYU will play the rubber game of the series at approximately 4:20 pm (CT).
