Micaela Whitney strikes out a career-high 15 in loss
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Micaela Whitney struck out a career-high 15, but it wasn't enough as Creighton Softball dropped a 2-1 decision in nine innings at Butler on Sunday afternoon.
Butler (25-20, 8-6 BIG EAST) moved past Creighton (25-17, 7-6 BIG EAST) into third place in the league standings with the victory. The top four teams in the league standings qualify for the BIG EAST Championships, to be held May 13-14, in Rosemont, Ill.
Creighton scored the day's first run when Jen Daro singled home Michelle Trulin, who had reached via a leadoff walk and moved up 60 feet on groundouts by Kelsey Allender and Allie Reinhart.
Butler answered in the bottom of the fifth inning. Riley Carter doubled with one out and scored when Krosley Ogden singled up the middle to score pinch-runner Jenna Foreman.
Carter doubled home pinch-runner Katelyn Cahill from first with two strikes and two outs in the bottom of the ninth for the winning run. Carter, who entered the game 9-for-64 all season, went 4-for-4 on the day.
Whitney struck out at least one batter in every inning on Sunday, while her 15 strikeouts were the most by any Bluejay since Becca Changstrom's 16 in a 16 inning game vs. Villanova on April 5, 2016. She allowed eight hits without a walk while throwing 96 strikes among her 142 pitches.
Kristin Gutierrez threw the first eight innings for BU, allowing three hits, but did not factor in the decision. The win went to Mikeila Boroff (9-3), who picked up her second win of the weekend with a scoreless ninth.
Creighton had three players with one hit each, as Aujanae McCoy and Tash Coffiel each joined Daro in the hit column. The loss was CU's first in three extra-inning games this spring.
The Bluejays return to action on Wednesday when they host Nebraska in a 6 pm game at the CU Sports Complex.
