Three-Run First Pushes Baseball Past Seton Hall, 3-1

Omaha, Neb. -- Staked to a three-run lead in the bottom of the first, sophomore starter Rollie Lacy limited Seton Hall to one run in seven innings to give Creighton Baseball the 3-1 win over the Pirates in the opening game of BIG EAST play on Friday, April 8.
The win lifted Creighton to 19-6 overall and 1-0 in BIG EAST action, while Seton Hall fell to 21-9 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.
Lacy helped spark his offense in the top of the first as the Minnesota native worked his way out of trouble in the opening frame. Seton Hall leadoff hitter Chris Chiaradio opened the game with a double to left, then was moved to third via a sacrifice bunt from Derek Jenkins. Lacy, however, induced a hard ground ball back to the mound and struck out the final batter in the inning to escape unscathed.
The momentum carried to Creighton's offense in the bottom of the first as sophomore Daniel Woodrow drew a walk, took second on a passed ball. A bunt single from senior Ryan Fitzgerald sent Woodrow to third, then an errant throw gave the Bluejays their first run of the game. One out later senior Reagan Fowler laced an RBI single to left to make it 2-0.
Two more Pirate miscues in the inning led to Creighton's third run as Fowler went to third on a ball threw the legs of Seton Hall's Mike Caputo, then scored on a wild pitch.
After a wild first inning both pitchers settled into a groove, Lacy set Seton Hall down in order in the second as he went on to retire 13 of the next 15 Pirate hitters. Lacy took the ball to the eighth, but Seton Hall put the first two men on force Bluejay head coach Ed Servais to call senior Nick Highberger on from the bullpen.
Highberger retired Chiaradio and Derek Jenkins for the first two outs. Southpaw John Oltman came on to face lefty Zach Weigel, surrendering a bloop double into left to make it 3-1.Â
The chess match between the two coaches continued as Pirate skipper Rob Sheppard brought Brett Fontenelli on to pinch hit. Servais countered with closer David Gerber. The resulting battle went the Bluejays way as Gerber struck out Fontenelli to end the Seton Hall threat.
Lacy picked up the win (5-1), allowing just the one run on three hits and two walks in seven innings of work, while Gerber delivered his seventh save of the season by getting the final four outs.
Seton Hall's Shane McCarthy fell to 3-3 with the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits in seven innings.
The Pirates and Bluejays will continue their three-game series on Saturday, April 9 at 2:00 pm.
