Creighton vs. Seton Hall Series
The Bluejays own a 7-2 all-time record against Seton Hall. Creighton has won the last four meetings, including two during the 2015 BIG EAST Tournament at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha. The Bluejays and Pirates met five times last season which included four wins by Creighton.
The Bluejays took two of three from Seton Hall during a weekend series in Omaha during the 2014 season. Each of Creighton's wins came during its final at bat in the 10th inning.
Â
Scouting the Pirates (2016: 20-8, 0-0 BIG EAST)
After getting off to a 2-5 start in the first seven games, Seton Hall has rebounded to win 20 of its last 23. The Pirates will face Wagner in a home game on Wednesday, before traveling to Omaha.
The Pirates are a very similar team to Creighton, reliant on pitching. The two team diverge, however, in that Seton Hall will run at every opportunity. The Pirates lead the NCAA with 81 stolen bases through 28 games, including 29 from Derek Jenkins. His mark is also the NCAA leading figure.
As a team the Pirates have a 3.22 ERA, led by an impressive 1.22 mark from Cullen Dana.
At the dish the key to the Pirates is slowing down Jenkins. Seton Hall's leadoff hitter has a team-high .315 average as well as a team best 19 RBI.
Bluejays Working Six Sided Canvass
The Bluejays are flying high over the past six weeks as Creighton has won 18-of-21 to move to 18-6.
After dropping three to begin the season at Fresno State, Creighton has taken six consecutive weekend series, including sweeps of Stetson, Murray State, UAB, North Dakota and Stony Brook. The only blemishs have been midweek losses to Kansas State (March 9) and Nerbaska (March 29) as well as a series opening loss in extra innings to Jacksonville on April 1.
Crawford Stuns the Dolphins
Senior Harrison Crawford had a two-home run performance and led Creighton to a 4-0 win over Jacksonville on April 2.
The senior lifted a no-doubter over the left-field wall for a solo homer in the fourth inning and added another long ball to his total with a two-run home run off the back wall of the left-field bullpen in the eighth inning. The third baseman finished the day 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Crawford entered the game with no home runs and two RBI.
Excellence of Execution
The Creighton bullpen placed an exclimation point on the Bluejays season thus far on Sunday, April 3 by preserving a one run lead in the final frame despite the Dolphins putting runners on the corners before an out was recorded.
In a 2-1 contest, Jacksonville put men at the corners with no outs in the top of the ninth inning against closer David Gerber via an error and a hit-and-run single through the left side.
With the game in the balance, head coach Ed Servais managed his bullpen to perfection to coax out the win. Servais first called upon senior southpaw John Oltman, who came on to strike out Sam Armstrong for the first out.
Next senior Connor Miller entered the fray. The Dolphins attempted to bring home the game-tying run with a squeeze play from JJ Gould, but Miller induced two foul balls before recording the second strikeout of the inning. Finally Miller got Nathan Koslowski for the final out on a fly ball to center, giving Creighton and Rogalla the win.
Rogalla Becoming the Beast
After watching his Sunday starting role be given to Austin Groth on March 13, sophomore Keith Rogalla has delivered three of his best performances of the season.
Since reclaiming the Sunday starting spot on March 20, Rogalla has allowed just 10 hits and one run in 18.1 innings to earn three straight victories.
The streak began Rogalla recorded a career-high nine strikeouts in 5.1 innings of shutout ball to earn his first win of the season over North Dakota.
The following Sunday he shut out Stony Brook over five innings, holding the Seawolves to three hits.
His last outing, however, may have been his best as he held Jacksonville to one run on four hits over eight innings. Rogalls needed just 82 pitches as he did not walk a batter.
