Seven Run Outburst Propels Baseball to Win Over Pirates, 7-1

Omaha, Neb. -- Powered by a seven run outburst in the middle innings, the Creighton Baseball team moved to 2-0 in BIG EAST play as the Bluejays defeated Seton Hall 7-1 on Saturday, April 9.
The win gave Creighton a 20-6 mark on the season, while Seton Hall fell to 21-10 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
With two starters entering the contest with ERAs just over 1.00, the game lived up to the anticipated pitcher's duel with the combined offensive output of the first three frames being one hit. A leadoff walk to senior Ryan Fitzgerald and a critical call by Creighton head coach Ed Servais, however, changed the direction of the game in the bottom of the fourth. With Fitzgerald at first and junior Nicky Lopez at the dish, Servais called for a hit-and-run. After a few cursory throws to first from Pirate starrer Cullen Dana, Fitzgerald took off for second. Lopez executed the call to perfection by stroking the ball into the gap vacated by Seton Hall shortstop Chris Chiaradio. With a running start, Fitzgerald forced the action by darting to third. The throw from left fielder Zach Wiegel got away, allowing Fitzgerald to score and sending Lopez to third.
With Creighton up 1-0, the game was delayed for several minutes as the home plate umpire was injured moving into position for a potential call at third. Following the delay, the remaining two umpires shifted to call the game. When play resumed the Bluejays tacked on two more runs as senior Reagan Fowler was hit by a pitch, senior Brett Murray plated Lopez via a sac fly to left and junior Bryce Only lifted a two-out double to left to bring Fowler in.
The Bluejays added four more runs to their total in the fifth to build a 7-0 advantage. Junior Daniel Woodrow got things started with a single to right. After a walk to Fitzgerald put two men on, Lopez reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Fowler followed with a two-run single up the middle. Senior Harrison Crawford continued the merry go round of Bluejays with an RBI single through the left side and finally Fowler scored on a double play grounder from Murray.
While the offense was cooking, junior Jeff Albrecht held Seton Hall in check. Albrecht took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and limited the Pirates to one run on three hits and two walks in 5.2 innings to move to 4-0 on the season. Cullen took the loss (5-1), allowing six runs on five hits and three walks over four innings.
Creighton senior Connor Miller sparkled in relief, holding Seton Hall to one hit in 2.1 innings of work.
Fowler closed the day 2-for-3 with two RBI, the only time he was retired was a well struck fly out to right-center.
Creighton and Seton Hall will conclude the three-game series on Sunday, April 10 at 12:00 pm.
