Creighton scores all 15 runs in the second and third innings
Creighton, which won 5-4 in the opener, improved to 21-12 on the year and remains in second in the BIG EAST with a 5-1 league record. Georgetown fell to 7-25 with the loss (1-6 BIG EAST).
"We had good patience at the plate and good pitch selection, and that was a key for us being as good as we were offensively today," said CU head coach Brent Vigness. "None of these runs count tomorrow, and we know Georgetown will do everything within their power to avoid a sweep. We have to make sure we show up and continue to be patient at the plate, hopefully play a little bit better defense, and continue to get good pitching."
Georgetown scored once in each of the first two innings to take the early 2-0 lead. In the first inning, Sarah Bennett doubled off the centerfield wall to score Samantha Giovanniello. In the second frame, Grace Appelbe walked and would later score on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Henry.
The Bluejays plated nine runs on nine hits in the second inning for their highest scoring inning of the season, then added six more runs in the third inning against Hoyas pitcher Delaney Osterday (1-7).
Creighton's second inning began with a single by Mileah McKelvy that was lost in the sun and followed by a walk to Blake Ringle. Anna O'Gorman would follow with a single to left, loading the bases. Aujanae McCoy would bloop a single over second base to give Creighton its first run of the game. Tash Coffiel then tripled to right-center to clear the bases and make it 4-2. Michelle Trulin would double to right-center to score Coffiel with CU's fifth run. Trulin would score on a wild pitch before Allie Reinhart and Jen Daro hit back-to-back home runs. Blake Ringle would close the scoring in the second with a single, then come around to score on Anna O'Gorman's RBI double.
The third inning started with consecutive bunts by Coffiel and Trulin before a walk to Kelsey Allender loaded the bases. Reinhart would walk to load the bases and force in CU's 10th run of the game. Daro would follow with a bases-loaded double to left to plate three more runs. O'Gorman would single to score Daro before Coffiel's RBI groundout scored Ringle and closed the scoring.
O'Gorman had her first three-hit game of the season to pace the Bluejays, driving home a pair. Coffiel, Daro and Trulin each had two hits and were each among five Bluejays that scored twice.
The offensive outburst made a winner out of Creighton starter Micaela Whitney, who allowed five hits and three walks in the complete game victory. Whitney whiffed eight Hoyas to improve to 5-4 on the season.
Osterday was charged with the loss in the circle for Georgetown. She threw 134 pitches in four innings of work, allowing 13 hits, 15 runs (14 earned) and six walks.
Creighton and Georgetown will close the series on Sunday with an 11 am start from the CU Sports Complex.
