Plymouth Meeting, Pa -- Leading 6-2 entering the top of the eight, just six outs from collecting a sweep of Villanova, the Creighton Baseball team endured a overnight suspension and held on to claim a 6-5 win on Sunday, May 1. Originally started as the nightcap of a doubleheader on Saturday, this game was halted prior to the top of the eighth inning due to darkness. The contest resumed today, with the Wildcats getting three runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it close.
The win lifted Creighton to 30-9 on the season and 8-1 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova fell to 15-28 overall and 3-9 in conference play.
The Bluejays took a 2-0 lead in the first inning seniors Matt Gandy and Brett Murray delivered RBI singles. Junior Daniel Woodrow led off the game with a walk, then stole second. Junior Nicky Lopez was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Senior Reagan Fowler sacrificed to put both Bluejay runners in scoring position, setting the stage for Gandy and Murray.
Villanova got one back in the bottom of the first, but the Bluejays answered with a run in the top of the fourth. Murray opened the frame with a single and quickly moved to third when Wildcat starter Zach Lutner threw away an attempted pickoff. Harrison Crawford followed with an RBI single to center to make it 3-1.
In the top of the sixth the Bluejays extended their lead to 6-1 on an RBI double from junior Kevin Connolly and a two-run double by senior Ryan Fitzgerald. Gandy and Crawford drew one and two out walks to start the Bluejay burst. Connolly plated Gandy and sent Crawford to third with a double down the left field line, then Fitzgerald sent another double down the left field line to make it 6-1.
Villanova began its comeback with a run in the seventh, then plated three in its first at-bat on Sunday. The Wildcats went down on strikes three times in the frame, but after the first out Villanova got a walk and back-to-back singles to make it 6-3. With two down in the frame, Adam Goss and Emmanuel Morris delivered two more RBI singles to make it 6-5. Reliever Ethan DeCaster, however, stopped the Wildcat rally with a strikeout of their best hitter Todd Czinege (the only Wildcat hitting over .300) to end the inning.
In the ninth senior John Oltman retired the first Villanova hitter, then closer David Gerber got the final two Wildcat hitters on strikes to nab his ninth save of the season.
After six strong innings, Bluejay starter Keith Rogalla gave way to the bullpen. Rogalla allowed one run on four hits in six frames, walking three and striking out seven, as he moved to 5-3 on the season with the victory.
Creighton returns to action on Friday, May 6 as the Bluejays host Georgetown at 6:30 at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
