OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton softball team scored three times in the first inning, but that would be it as league-leading DePaul picked up a 7-3 victory over the Bluejays in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday, May 7.
DePaul (25-24, 14-3 BIG EAST) moved over the .500 mark for the first time since winning its season-opener with the victory, and continued its chase towards a regular-season title. Creighton (25-20, 7-9 BIG EAST) saw its hopes for a berth in the four-team BIG EAST Tournament take a major dent with the loss.
DePaul didn't waste any time getting on the board early, as Dylan Christensen singled to start the game before Morgan Maize parked the game's fifth pitch of the day over the raised fence in center for her league-leading 10th home run of the season.
Creighton answered, forcing Maize to throw 45 pitches in the bottom of the first inning. Creighton's first two batters were retired before six straight women reached base. Walks to Allie Reinhart and Jen Daro preceded a wild pitch, and CU would tie the score on a double to the gap in right-center by Anna O'Gorman. Blake Ringle and Aujanae McCoy walked to load the bases before Kelsey Allender walked on four pitches to force home O'Gorman with the go-ahead score. CU's five walks matched the program's total over the previous fi
DePaul fought back to tie the score in the top of the second inning when Gena Lenti scored on Maize's hard-hit double up the middle that rolled to the wall in left-center.
The Blue Demons took the lead in the fourth inning, as Christensen hit a two-run home run to make it 5-3. DePaul added to that margin when Nicole Phil homered to lead off the fourth inning, and another to make it 7-3 after a pair of errors in the sixth inning.
O'Gorman paced CU's offense with a 2-for-3 day, driving home a pair with two doubles. Micaela Whitney (8-8) was tagged with the loss for CU after surrendering nine hits and six earned runs in a complete game effort. She struck out eight in the game.
Christensen was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI for DePaul, while Maize finished 2-for-4 and drove in three in the contest. Maize also picked up the win in the circle, improving to 18-14 this spring with seven innings of four-hit ball.
