Women's Tennis Ends Long Weekend With Win Over Missouri Western State

Creighton finished a three-day trip through Missouri at 2-1
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Creighton women's tennis team picked up a 5-2 victory over Missouri Western State at the Genesis Health Club in St. Joseph, Mo. on Sunday afternoon during its third match in three days.
The Bluejays are now 4-5, while the Griffins fell to 0-3.
The win on Sunday marked Creighton's second win of the weekend in the state of Missouri. The Jays defeated Missouri State in Springfield on Friday before falling to Central Arkansas on Saturday also in Springfield, prior to stopping in St. Joseph on the team's return trip to Omaha.
Creighton earned the doubles point with wins at all three positions. Hylan Miller and Claire Embree's 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles secured the point.
The Bluejays opened singles play with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 before Missouri Western State closed the overall dual gap to two with a 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 2.
Both Ashley Ishimura (No. 1) and Michaela Henne (No. 3) each won in straight sets to open the individual action.
Ishimura snapped a four-match losing streak, while Henne moved her season win total to a team-best six.
Kendra Lavallee's 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles helped Creighton claim the overall match.
Junior Ashley Monaco competed in her first action during the 2017 season on Sunday afternoon at the No. 5 singles slot. The Brewster, N.Y. won her opening set 6-0 before falling 7-6 (7-4) to force a deciding third set. In a 10-point breaker, Monaco prevailed with a 10-4 victory to give Creighton its fourth singles victory.
"This was good weekend overall for us, picking up two wins and nearly all three," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We continue to get stronger mentally and will need to keep improving in all aspects in order to have the season that we are capable of having."
Creighton is back on the courts March 6-9 for the team's annual spring break trip to Florida.
