Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Georgetown, Dellinger Records Six RBIs During Game Two

Creighton fell 5-2 before defeating the Hoyas 11-6
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Creighton softball team opened the BIG EAST schedule with a split during a doubleheader against Georgetown at Guy Mason Field in Washington, D.C. on Saturday. The Hoyas defeated the Bluejays 5-2 in the first game before Creighton claimed an 11-6 win in the second.
Creighton is now 10-17 overall and 1-1 in BIG EAST play, while Georgetown is 8-18 and 1-1 in league contests.
Sam Dellinger finished game two with six RBIs while going 2-for-3 with a double and home run. The freshman set a Creighton single-game record for RBIs in a BIG EAST contest. Her total also marked the most in any game since Jen Daro had six last season against Western Michigan (Feb. 20, 2016).Â
The Bluejay record for RBIs in a single-game is eight, set by current assistant coach Alexis Cantu on April 6, 2012 against Wichita State.
Dellinger was one of three Bluejays to record two or more RBIs in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday as Ashley Cantu finished 3-for-5 with a two doubles and two RBIs, and Sam Crowley went 2-for-4, including a double and two RBIs.
Sophomore Jayci McGill also had a double and RBI during her fourth career start as a Bluejay.
Creighton scored five runs behind the power of three doubles to take a comfortable lead after the first half inning. Dellinger started her memorable performance with a double to center field to drive in the first two runs, and McGill launched her first career double two batters later to drive in pinch-runner Kristin Fry from second. Crowley, the eighth Bluejay to hit in the first, capped the early offense with a two-RBI double.
Georgetown cut the lead to three with two runs produced by only one hit during the bottom of the first.
Dellinger drove in her third and fourth RBIs of the game with a two-run home run during the top of the second. The freshman recorded her team-leading third home run to make it 7-2.Â
Cantu expanded the Creighton lead to 8-2 with a RBI-single to left field during the third.Â
The Hoyas responded with one in the bottom of the third with a solo home run, but the Bluejays scored two in he fifth and one in the seventh.
During the fifth frame, Cantu doubled and Dellinger produced a sacrifice fly to make it 10-3.
In the seventh, Dellinger drove in her sixth RBI of the game with a base loaded walk to force in Cantu from third.
Georgetown did not go quietly in the last of the seventh, scoring three runs to trim the final deficit to five.Â
Tash Coffiel finished with a game-high four hits, setting a new single-game career high for base knocks.Â
During game one, the Bluejays did not score during the first six innings before scoring two in the seventh to close the final margin to three.Â
Cantu and Coffiel each tallied RBIs during the final frame.Â
The Hoyas scored two in the first and three in the third to build a 5-0 lead.
The Bluejays recorded only two hits during the first six innings of action, as Georgetown starter Anna Brooks Pacha recorded nine strikeouts during the first 18 outs before finishing the game with 10 punch outs.Â
