Stroschein, Collins & Emodi Lead Baseball to 5-2 Win over Nebraska

Omaha, Neb. -- Behind five strong innings from senior Austin Stroschein, the Creighton Baseball squad bested intrastate rival Nebraska, 5-2, on Tuesday, April 18 to collect its seventh straight win.
The victory pushed the Bluejays to 15-16 on the season, while Nebraska fell to 21-14-1 overall.
The Bluejays got out to a quick start as freshman Isaac Collins drew a one out walk, stole second then scampered home on an RBI single from sophomore Michael Emodi in the bottom of the first.
Creighton's lead grew to 3-0 in the as the Bluejays took advantage of a Nebraska error. Collins opened the inning with a single to center. Emodi moved him to second with a one-out single to left-center. After freshman Will Robertson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, senior Riley Landuyt reached on an error by Nebraska third baseman Angelo Altavilla. The error allowed Collins to score, senior Bryce Only followed with an RBI ground out to second as Creighton went up 3-0.Â
Stroschein mowed through the Huskers on the bump, setting down 12 of the first 14 hitters he faced to deliver four shutout frames. Stroschein worked around two hits in the fifth as Emodi gunned down Nebraska left fielder Mojo Hagge trying to steal second.
Nebraska opened the sixth with consecutive singles, sending Creighton head coach Ed Servais to the mound for junior Ethan DeCaster. The Minnesota native limited the Huskers to two runs in the frame allowing the Bluejays to hold onto the lead, 3-2.
Relievers Brennan Hammer and Jackson Vescelus held the Huskers off the scoreboard in the seventh and eighth innings. Clinging to its one-run edge, the Bluejay bats went back to work in the bottom of the eighth. Sophomore Thomas Luevano and Emodi opened the inning with consecutive singles to send Nebraska to the bullpen. One out later Only lifted an RBI single to right, then freshman Parker Upton followed suit with a second single to right.
Staked to a 5-2 lead, the Bluejays brought in closer David Gerber, who worked around a walk and a hit batter to record his fourth save of the season. It was Gerber's 24th career save, tying the Creighton record held by Steve Grasley (2001-04).
Stroschein earned the win (1-0), allowing two runs on five hits in five innings, while Nebraska's Matt Waldron took the loss (2-4) surrendering three runs (one earned) on five hits in four innings.
Offensively Emodi finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Collins was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Only finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Creighton returns to action on Friday, April 21 as the Bluejays open a three-game series against Villanova at 7:00 pm. The game will be broadcast locally on NET (Nebraska Educational Television).
