Softball Suffers Saturday Sweep Against Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The Creighton softball team lost twice against the Villanova Wildcats on Saturday afternoon in Villanova, Pa. The Wildcats defeated the Bluejays by scores of 5-3 and 7-0.
Creighton is now 11-22 overall and 2-6 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova is 19-12 overall and 4-4 in league action.
Sam Dellinger and Anna O'Gorman combined to go 5-for-6 with three RBIs and two runs scored during the first game of the day, but the rest of the Bluejays' offense recorded only two hits during the two-run loss.
Dellinger and O'Gorman tallied consecutive two-out singles during the first inning before a strikeout ended the frame.
Villanova broke into the scoring column with a two-run home run to left-center field during the bottom of the second. Brittany Husk sent a 3-2 delivery over the wall to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
Creighton tied the game in the third with three consecutive hits. After two quick outs opened the inning, Tash Coffiel tripled to the wall in right-center field. Dellinger drove in the first Bluejay run of the game with an infield single. O'Gorman doubled to left center and drove in Dellinger from first to knot the score at 2-2.
The tie did not last for long as Villanova scored two runs on three hits and one error during the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead.
Neither team scored during the fourth or fifth before the Bluejays and Wildcats traded a pair of solo home runs in the sixth.Â
Dellinger cut the deficit to 4-3 with her team-leading fourth home run on the first pitch of the top of the sixth, but the next three Bluejays recorded outs.Â
Bryana Clark nearly escaped the bottom of the inning without allowing a run, but Villanova's Dana Morris homered to center field on a 2-2 count with two outs in the frame.
Allie Reinhart led off the top of the 7th with a single before two strikeouts and an out at second base ended the game.
Reinhart paced the Creighton offense during the second game with a 2-for-3 performance, as the Bluejays fell 7-0.
Creighton starter Michal Hylton escaped bases-loaded jams in each of the first two innings and allowed only two runs during the first five frames.
Villanova scored with a sacrifice fly in the first and solo home run during the fifth.
After the Wildcats left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, O'Gorman walked on four pitches and Reinhart singled to give Creighton two runners on with no outs during the second. Jordyn Sturgeon bunted both runners into scoring position before a fly out, intentional walk and ground out ended the threat.Â
A double, hit by pitch and walk loaded the bases for Villanova in the bottom of the second before Hylton struck out Nikki Alden -- the Wildcats' leading hitter -- with a pitch on the outside corner for the final out of the inning.
Creighton's lead-off hitter reached during the third and fourth but the Jays did not score in either frame.
