Women's Soccer Kicks off 2017 at Iowa State on Friday Night

Omaha, Neb. -- The Creighton women's soccer squad will open the 2017 season for Bluejay athletics as Creighton battles Iowa State at 7:30 pm on Friday, Aug. 18.

Scouting Iowa State (0-0-0)
The Cyclones return seven starters and 19 letterwinners from a squad that won 10 matches last season. Among the returners is senior goalkeeper Lindsey Hendon, who started all 19 matches for the Cyclones last season. Hendon closed 2016 with a 0.88 goals against average, allowing 17 goals on the season.
One interesting facet was Hendon posted 10 shutouts last season, the only time she allowed a goal in a victory was against Creighton on Aug. 28, 3016.
Offensively Iowa State has its top three scorers back from last season in Klasey Medelberg (10 points on four goals and two assists), Emily Steil (Seven points on one goal and five assists) and Hannah Cade (Seven Points on three goals and one assist).
Bluejays in Season Openers
Creighton has a 15-11-2 mark in season openers all-time and are 13-14-1 in its first road match of the season. Under Paule the Bluejays are 2-0 in season openers, but this will be the first time Paule has opened the season on the road.
The Bluejays won its opening match last season, a 5-3 over Iowa on Aug. 19. The last time Creighton opened a season on the road was 2014, when the Bluejays defeated South Dakota State 3-2.

Head coach Ross Paule made improving the 2017 schedule a priority, that got started right out of the gate as the Bluejays open the year with four consecutive road contests.

Series History: Creighton trails Iowa State, 0-5-1
The Cyclones and Bluejays have met six times previously, with Iowa State claiming five of those contests. Friday's battle will be just the second time the two squads have faced off in Ames, Iowa. The series began in 2005, which was also the last time Iowa State hosted the contest. Last season the Cyclones bested the Bluejays 3-1 on Aug. 28 in Omaha.

The offense got going early as sophomore Hannah Miller gathered a deflected shot then delivered a goal in the third minute of play. Creighton pushed its lead to 2-0 in the 17th minute as junior Emma Braasch banged home a goal. Creighton added two more goals in the second half, before yielding the first shot to Hastings in the 79th minute of play.

The Bluejays defense limited the ranked Golden Gophers to just one goal in Creighton's first exhibition contest of the season. Minnesota banged away with 23 shots, but the Bluejays frustrated the Golden Gophers by allowing just six shots on goal. While the defense gave a strong performance, the offense was limited to just two shots, including one on frame.
