Omaha, Neb. -- Forced to play a person down due to a questionable Red Card in the 87th minute, the Creighton women's soccer team battled St. John's into a second overtime before falling 1-0 to the Red Storm on Thursday, Sept. 28.
The loss dropped Creighton to 2-8-1 on the season and 0-2-0 in BIG EAST play, while St. John's moved to 5-5-1 overall and 1-1-0 in conference action.
A closely contested match was changed in the 87th minute as Creighton freshman Haylee Blach was issue a Red Card. Trying to track down St. John's Madeleine Watson's just outside, Blach made contact with Watson which send the Red Storm player to the field and denied a scoring chance against Bluejay goalkeeper McKenzie Meola. After a convergence of the officiating crew, the decision to remove Blach from the contest was made.
Playing a person down the remainder of the match, Creighton denied two St. John's opportunities as regulation came to an end. The Creighton defense held firm once more in the first overtime, holding St. John's to two shots and a corner, but midway through the second overtime the Bluejays' fatigue showed as Maia Cabrera sent a 35-yard pass from near midfield to Christian Bellero just outside the goal box. The result was a one-on-one matchup with Meola that went to the Red Storm for the decisive goal.
A defensive battle throughout the match, the Bluejays and Red Storm each had scoring opportunities in the first half. Creighton's best chance came late in the period as sophomore Taryn Jakubowski forced St. John's goalkeeper Jordan Kamp into a leaping save in the 42nd minute.
St. John's outshot Creighton 20-16 in the match, while both squads sent eight shots on goal.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 1 as the Bluejays host DePaul at 1:00 pm.
