Freshmen Erin Epperson and Laura Higueras each pick up first dual singles victories
DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Creighton women's tennis team fell 5-2 against Drake at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa on Friday afternoon to open the 2018 dual season.
The Bluejays were bested by the Bulldogs in doubles play, losing all three matches. Ashley Ishimura and Darby Rosette fell 6-3 at No. 1, before the Bluejays lost 6-2 at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots as the Bulldogs came away with the doubles point.
"Doubles got away from us early at two and three, and Drake was just the stronger team," head coach Tom Lilly said.
Drake opened up singles play with three straight-sets victories in the No. 3, 2, and 5 spots. Freshman Laura Higueras defeated Alex Kozlowski 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6 to give Creighton its first victory of the afternoon. Fellow freshman Erin Epperson also picked up a singles win, 7-6, 6-1 at No. 4, but Drake took the overall match with a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 1.
"We had several sets decided by just a couple of deuce points and had set points that if we win those, the team result could have been different," Lilly said. "Both freshmen got their first dual singles wins, so that was a positive.
"We will continue to improve and have a very strong Iowa team tomorrow to start working on that improvement."
Creighton returns to the courts on Saturday afternoon in Iowa City, Iowa against the Hawkeyes at noon.
