Faber's Late Heroics Provide Final Push as Women's Basketball Takes Down Marquette, 74-73

Milwaukee, Wis. -- Trailing by two with under five seconds remaining, junior Audrey Faber gave her squad the final push it needed to end Marquette's 16-game home winning streak as Creighton upset the Golden Eagles, 74-73 on Sunday, Feb. 4.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 14-9 on the season and 8-5 in BIG EAST action, while Marquette fell to 15-8 overall and 9-3 in conference play.
Entering the fourth quarter up 62-53, Creighton pushed its lead in double-digits with a driving layup from sophomore Jaylyn Agnew. Leading 66-55 with 9:10 showing on the clock, Marquette began to turn up its defensive pressure. As a result the Golden Eagles chipped into the Creighton lead, working down to 66-64 (6:05). Freshman Temi Carda ended Marquette's 9-0 run by beating the press for a fast break layup.
Still a one possession game at 68-65 with under four minutes left, senior Sydney Lamberty stepped up with a traditional three-point play. Lamberty's bucket came after the Minnesota native beat two defenders, then drew a blocking foul on Marquette's Danielle King. Following the bonus free throw to put the Bluejays up 71-65 (3:25). The Golden Eagles, however, hit their next four shots to surge ahead 73-71 with five seconds left. Allazia Blockton hit a short jumper to give Marquette its first lead since the first quarter.
With the game on the line, Creighton head coach Jim Flanery used his final timeout to advance the ball. The Bluejays got the ball into Lamberty, she quickly found Faber along the left elbow. The Iowa native drove the lane for the game-tying deuce and drew a foul on Marquette's Erika Davenport. Faber calmly drained the free throw to give Creighton a 74-73 edge with 2.1 second left. Marquette head coach Carolyn Kieger used a timeout to advance the ball, but Blockton's 14-footer bounced off the rim to give the Bluejays the victory.
Creighton started off quickly as Lamberty knocked down a trey, then senior Bailey Norby dropped in a reverse layup to give the Bluejays a 5-0 edge (8:48). After Marquette claimed its first lead of the game with six straight from Erika Davenport, Creighton responded quickly as Carda knotted the game at 14-14 (1:26) with a three-ball from the corner. Tied at 16-16 in the closing seconds of the frame, Lamberty dropped in a running jumper to give the Bluejays an 18-16 advantage after one.
The Bluejays lead throughout the middle quarters, pushing their lead to as much as eight (41-33) in the second. Creighton's lead grew to 11 (55-44) midway through the second, with the Bluejays taking their nine-point gap into the fourth
Lamberty led Creighton with 18 points, while Faber delivered 16, Carda had 13 and Agnew rounded out the double figure scorers with 12.
Marquette got a game-high 23 points from Davenport, as well as 20 points from Blockton in the loss.
The Bluejays return to the hardwood on Saturday, Feb. 10 as Creighton heads to Rhode Island to battle Providence at 11:00 am.
