
Offense Pounces on Central Arkansas Late as Baseball Claims 12-5 Win

The win lifted the Bluejays to 5-2 on the season, giving Creighton their fourth consecutive win. Central Arkansas fell to 2-6 overall, dropping its third straight.
Creighton jumped out to a 3-0 lead with two runs in the second and one in the third. Junior Michael Emodi was hit by a pitch to open the second, then sophomore Will Robertson blooped a single to left. Sophomore Jason Allbery moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice and junior Ryan Mantle drove a two-run single up the middle.
The Bluejays run in the third came on a walk to sophomore Isaac Collins, a stolen base and an RBI single to right-center by Emodi.
The Bears took advantage of a few Bluejay errors to pull even with two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth, but Creighton starter Ryan Tapani worked out of trouble each time. In each frame Central Arkansas loaded the bases, doing so with zero outs on a single, a walk and an error. A sac fly brought in the first run, while UCA plated an unearned run on a single from Josh Somdecerff. Central Arkansas loaded the bags with one down in the sixth on a single, an error and a walk. The Bears pulled even with an unearned run was forced in on a walk.
Central Arkansas had another chance to take the lead in the seventh, loading the bags with no outs once more. This time the Bears reached on a sinlge, a hit batter and an error. Senior Grant Spranger, who had come on to start the frame, forced the first runner at home on a grounder back to the mound. Sophomore Mitch Boyer came on from the pen to end the threat with a strikeout and a grounder to first.
The momentum Boyer gave his offense led to five Creighton runs in the eighth on five hits and a UCA miscue. Back-to-back singles from junior Jack Strunc and Emodi opened the frame. One out later Allbery laced an RBI single through the right side. Mantle loaded the bases on a sharp single to left, then junior Jordan Hovey picked up an RBI as he was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Parker Upton made it 6-3 with a foul out to left, then junior Clark Brinkman smacked an RBI single up the middle. The final run of the frame came on a throwing error.
The Bears answered with two runs in the eighth, but Creighton tacked on four more in the ninth. During Creighton's final trip to the plate the Bluejays scored four runs on three hits, including RBI doubles from Robertson and Hovey.
Boyer earned the win (1-0) for Creighton, allowing two runs (one earned) in an inning of relief.
Offensively the Bluejays got three hits from Brinkman and two RBI from both Mantle and Hovey.
The Bluejays return to the diamond for the second game of the series with Central Arkansas on Saturday, March 3 at 12:00 pm (CT).
