The Bluejays defeated the Hoyas 5-4 during the second game of the doubleheader after being shutout during the first game
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton softball team scored five runs during the bottom of the fourth inning to help head coach Brent Vigness earn his 900th career victory, as the Bluejays salvaged the split of a doubleheader against Georgetown on Saturday at the Creighton Sports Complex. The Hoyas claimed the first game of the day, 4-0, before Creighton secured a 5-4 victory during the second.
Vigness improved to 900-630-4 during 30 years as a softball head coach, including 752-559-3 in 25 years at Creighton.Â
With Saturday's doubleheader split, Creighton moved to 23-14 (8-3 BIG EAST), while the Hoyas went to 14-34 (5-11 BIG EAST).Â
After falling behind 2-0, the Bluejays scored five runs -- each with two outs -- during the bottom of the fourth inning to take a three-run lead before holding on for their eighth one-run victory of the season.
Creighton's home half of the fourth frame started quietly with consecutive foul outs. Kaitlynn Hunt started the two-out rally as she reached first after being hit by the pitch. Tash Coffiel tripled to the right-center field wall to drive in Creighton's first run of the game. After Ashley Cantu walked, Sam Crowley started a string of four consecutive RBI singles. Crowley's single drove home Coffiel for the tying run, and Mileah McKelvy sent home Cantu for the go-ahead run. Kelli Finan produced the fourth Creighton run of the game before Jordyn Sturgeon laced a single through the right-side of the infield and helped the Bluejays build a 5-2 lead.
Georgetown cut the deficit to a single run with two runs on three hits and two errors during the top of the sixth inning. The Hoyas also left the tying and go-ahead runs on base as Creighton's Logan Black induced a fly out to center field to end the inning with Creighton leading 5-4.
During the top of the seventh, Georgetown drew a one-out walk, but Black tallied her fifth strikeout of the game and Hope Moreno made a diving play at first base to end the game.Â
Black went the distance for her second career complete game, and allowed eight hits and two earned runs while striking five and walking four during her eighth victory of the season.Â
Sturgeon led the offense by going 2-for-4 with an RBI.Â
Creighton's first hit of the day came during the second inning as Sturgeon produced a one-out single into left field.
The Bluejays were no-hit by Georgetown's Anna Brooks Pacha during the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Georgetown earned the 4-0 victory with a single run during the top of the first inning and three unearned runs in the final two innings.
Cantu walked twice, while Crowley and Mikaela Pechar each walked once as the Bluejays produced only four baserunners during game No. 1 on Saturday.
Creighton and Georgetown conclude their three-game series with a single game on Sunday at 11 a.m. Sunday's contest can be viewed on the BIG EAST Digital Network.Â
