Baseball Snags Early Lead, Outlasts UNO 10-6

Omaha, Neb. -- After racing out ot a 7-1 lead in the top of the fifth, the Creighton Baseball team outlasted UNO 10-6 on Wednesday, May 9.
The win moved the Bluejays to 28-15 on the season, while the Mavericks fell to 14-29.
The Bluejays raced out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as sophomore Isaac Collins drew a one-out walk, then junior Michael Emodi singled and sophomore Will Robertson laced an RBI single through the left-center. With two down in the frame, junior Thomas Luevano launched a two-run double to right-center to push the Bluejay lead to 3-0.
Creighton extended its advantage to 5-0 in the third with a similar formula. Collins singled, Emodi walked, then Robertson his into a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners. Junior Jack Strunc and Luevano followed with RBI singles.
The Mavericks answered with a run in the bottom of the third, yet Creighton scored two more in the fifth to build a 7-1 edge. This time the scoring came quickly as Emodi laced a single through the left side and Roberston smashed a mammoth home run to right field. A shot that easily traveled 425 feet, his 12th of the season.
Creighton starter Ian Evans was chased in the fifth as the Mavericks opened the inning with a walk and a hit batter. Nebraska-Omaha went on to plate four runs in the frame, closing Creighton's advantage to 7-5.
Bluejay reliever junior Evan Johnson came on to open the bottom of the sixth, holding the Mavericks at bay with seven crucial outs.
The Bluejay offense added some insurance in the eighth with two runs on four singles, including a two-run single to right-center from Emodi.
Creighton added another run on a double from junior Ryan Mantle and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Jason Allbery in the ninth.
Evans collected the win to move to 3-1 on the season, allowing three runs on seven hits in four innings of work. Maverick starter Grant Supponchick took the loss (1-2), allowing three runs on three hits in an inning.
Mitch Boyer earned his second save with 1.2 innings of one-run relief.
Offensively Robertson led the Bluejays with four hits, three RBI and three runs scored. Emodi, meanwhile posted three hits, two runs scored and two RBI.
Creighton returns to action on Friday, May 11 as the Bluejays begin their final BIG EAST series of the season at Villanova. First pitch is slated for 2:15 pm.
