Vontz Leads Men's Golf To Top-Five Finish at Zach Johnson Invitational

OMAHA, Neb. -- Junior Nate Vontz tied for fourth place to help the Creighton men's golf team to a fourth place finish at the Zach Johnson Invitational, which concluded on Tuesday in West Des Moines, Iowa.

Vontz entered the day two shots out of the lead and hovered near the top of the leaderboard throughout the morning before double-bogeys on two of his final three holes thwarted his run for medalist honors. He would finish with rounds of 73, 71 and 74 for a 218 total, three shots behind eventual winner Garrett Willis of Valparaiso. Vontz's tie for fourth place marks his best finish as a Bluejay.

Senior Andrew McCormick fired CU's best round on Tuesday, shooting an even-par 71. That came on the heels of circuits of 79 and 77 on Monday as he tied for 19th place in the tournament.

Brandt Radloff contributed to the Bluejay cause with a tie for 28th place. He shot rounds of 74, 78 and 77 for a 229 total.

Tucker Knaak tied for 36th place with rounds of 78, 75 and 79, three shots and 13 places ahead of freshman Jack Olson (82, 76, 77).

Competing as an individual was Joe Torkelson. Torkelson tied for 69th place following scores of 82, 86 and 80 for a 248 aggregate.

Loyola Chicago won the event with an 888 total, two shots ahead of Valparaiso. Tournament host Drake was third with an 896 total, while Creighton and North Dakota State tied for fourth with a 902 overall score. The tournament featured 12 teams and 75 competitors on the Glen Oaks Country Club course, which measured 6,898 yards on its par 71 layout.

The Bluejays return to the course at the 35th Georgetown Intercollegiate on Oct. 14-15 in Bealsville, Md.
