Baseball Gets Back on the Field at Wichita State on Friday

Omaha, Neb. -- After spending the week battling the weather to get back to Nebraska from Louisiana, practicing indoors due to the cold and canceling games in March due to snow and frozen field, the Creighton Baseball team can finally focus on baseball as the Bluejays hit the road to Wichita today. Creighton faces its former MVC rival for at least two games on Friday and possibly a third on Saturday.

Series History:Â Creighton Trails Wichita State, 49-116-1
Long standing Missouri Valley Rivals that have even battled in the College World Series, Creighton and Wichita State renew their battles this weekend. The Shockers own a 116-49-1 edge in the overall series. Under Ed Servais Creighton is 18-27 against Wichita State.
Battling the Midwest Snow
Although the Bluejays are off to a hot start, the Midwest weather is doing its part to cool things down. Intense cold and sitting snow in Omaha have already forced the Bluejays to cancel its midweek opening two-game set with Northern Colorado on March 5-6.
In addition Servais and Purdue are exploring alternative neutral sites for weekend series scheduled in Omaha on March 8-10.
Creighton Off To Best Start Since 2011
With five victories in their opening six contests the Bluejays have started strong. So much so that Creighton is off to its best start since the 2011 season, when the Bluejays went 9-1 in their first ten games.

For the second time in 2019, Creighton rallied from a ninth-inning deficit to collect the win as the Bluejays bested McNeese State 11-7 on Feb. 23. Creighton entered the final frame down 7-5.

Digging the Long Ball
With 13 home runs in the first six games, the Creighton bats are on a record pace. Dating back to 1999 the most by a Bluejay squad was 77 in the 1999 season. Creighton blasted 53 round trippers in 2010 and 2005. Last season the Bluejays hit 37 as a team.
Six Run Ninth Vaults Baseball to 11-7 Win Over McNeese State
For the second time in as many weeks, the Creighton Baseball team turned a ninth inning deficit into a dramatic win as the Bluejays plated six runs in the ninth to outlast McNeese State, 11-7, on
Saturday, Feb. 23.
Trailing 7-5 entering the ninth junior Jason Allbery and sophomore Garrett Gilbert got things going with back-to-back walks. One out later juniors Isaac Collins and Parker Upton were hit by pitches to make it a 7-6 contest. Junior Will Robertson gave Creighton an 8-7 lead with an two run single up the middle, then Holton launched the a three-run home run to left center to put the game away.
The offensive star of the game was junior Jake Holton, who smashed two home runs including a three-run blast in the ninth to salt the game away.
Three Former Jays Open Spring for San Francisco Giants
A trio of former Bluejays kicked off the 2019 Spring Training season on the same field as Ty Blach, Pat Venditte and Mike Gerber each appeared in the first game for the San Francisco Giants on Saturday, Feb. 23.
