Women's Tennis Claims 6-1 Victory Over Western Illinois
2/9/2019 1:37:00 PM | Women's Tennis
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Creighton women's tennis team claimed a 6-1 neutral site victory against Western Illinois on Saturday morning at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
The Bluejays improved to 2-3 this spring, while the Leathernecks fell to 1-3.
Creighton started the match with 6-3, 6-2 wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles slots, respectively. Ashley Ishimura and Sarah Wilcox improved to 2-3 as the top doubles pair, and the duo Michaela Henne and Gabby O'Connor moved to 2-1 as the No. 2 doubles team.
The Bluejays continued their winning ways with straight-sets victories at the top three singles positions to secure the overall dual.
Wilcox dropped only two games at the No. 2 spot, Ishimura won 7-5, 6-1 at the top spot and Henne earned a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3.
Erin Epperson and Claire Embree also secured victories at the fourth and fifth positions in matches that went only one set because the overall match was already decided.
O'Connor led 5-3 in the first set of her No. 6 singles match, but could not complete the match because of an injury.
"We got a win today, but we just aren't where we need to be in singles and doubles," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We will continue to work and get better both mentally and physically."
The Bluejays return to the court on Feb. 17 for a match in Lincoln, Nebraska against Wichita State.
