Bluejays won doubles point and No. 1 and No. 6 singles positions before Penguins rallied
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Creighton men's tennis team narrowly fell to Youngstown State, 4-3, on Tuesday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
The Bluejays moved their season record to 4-7, while the Penguins improved to 6-5.
Creighton opened Tuesday action with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles slots to take the first point and gained a 3-0 edge with straight-sets wins in the No. 1 and No. 6 singles matches before Youngstown State won the final four singles matches, including two during third-set 10-point tiebreakers.
Daniel Lopez-Rey and Jose Oscar Diaz combined for a 6-3 win in No. 3 doubles before the Penguins evened the early action with a 6-4 win at No. 2. Mac Mease and Nick Campbell helped the Bluejays earn their first point of the day with a 6-4 victory in the top doubles match. Mease and Campbell combined for their second consecutive win as a pair at the top spot.
Campbell and Mease carried their momentum from doubles play into singles as both claimed straight-sets wins to put Creighton ahead 3-0 in the overall match. Campbell won 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 1 single contest and improved to 6-4 in the top slot and Mease earned his seventh singles win of the year, 6-3, 6-3.
Youngstown State earned its first victory of the day with a straight-sets win at the No. 2 single position. YSU continued to claw its way back into the dual with three-set win at No. 4. The Penguins claimed a 6-2 win in the first set before Creighton's Jose Oscar Diaz evened the tilt with a 6-2 victory in the second, forcing a 10-point tiebreaker to decide the match. In a back-and-forth battle, Youngstown State prevailed by a 10-7 margin for its second win of the day.
The Penguins tied the match at 3-3 with a straight-sets win at No. 5.
The dual was decided by a 10-point tiebreaker that needed extra games during the No. 3 match. Armando Gandini fell 6-4 in the opening set but battled back for a 7-6 win in the second. Neither player gave an inch during the deciding set before Youngstown State prevailed with a 13-11 victory.
"We played hard today, so to lose by a 10-point breaker is tough," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We had to fight for everything we got against a strong Youngstown State team and they beat us literally by two points.
"We will need to get over the loss quickly and play well tomorrow."
Creighton returns to the courts on Wednesday afternoon against Saint Joseph's.
