ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Creighton women's tennis team swept Providence, 7-0, on Tuesday at the USTA National Campus during the Bluejays' first match of the week in Orlando.
The Bluejays improved to 4-7 overall and 1-1 against BIG EAST opponents with the victory.
Creighton started the day with 6-2 victories at the top two doubles slots for the first team point. Ashley Ishimura and Sarah Wilcox improved to 5-4 this season as the top doubles pair, while Michaela Henne and Claire Embree teamed up for the first time this season at No. 2.
The Bluejays sealed the overall match with straight-sets victories at each of the top three singles positions. Wilcox won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2, Henne claimed a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 3 and Ishimura secured the team victory with a 6-4, 6-1 win during the top singles match.
Freshman Meredith Benson earned her third singles match of the spring and controlled a 6-3, 6-3 decision at the No. 6 position.
Embree and Erin Epperson each won three-set matches to end the match. Embree fell during the first set at No. 5, 6-4, before battling back for 6-2 and 10-7 wins in the final two frames. Epperson won the first set in a tiebreaker during the No. 4 singles match but fell 6-3 in the second. In the deciding set, the Bluejay sophomore secured a 10-4 win in the 10-point tiebreaker to complete the clean sweep of Providence.
"We played well today for the first time outdoors," head coach Tom Lilly said. "The conditions outside make for a lot of adjustments and it was good to be able to sweep Providence in our first conference match of the week."
Creighton returns to the courts in Orlando on Wednesday for a match at 11:15 a.m. against Seton Hall.
