Softball Uses Six-Run Third Inning To Control UMKC, Bounces Back From Shutout Against SDSU

Bluejays downed UMKC 10-4 after being shutout, 5-0, by South Dakota State
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Creighton softball team scored six runs in the third inning before putting up 10 against UMKC during the second of two games on Saturday at the Urban Youth Academy.Â
The Bluejays downed the Kangaroos 10-4 following a 5-0 shutout loss against South Dakota State.
Creighton moved its season record to 8-9 with the Saturday split.
UMKC jumped out to a 3-0 edge in the bottom of the second inning before Creighton scored the next 10 runs of the game.
The Bluejays sent 11 hitters to the plate and used four hits, three walks and a hit by pitch to produce a six-spot in the top of the third inning against the host Kangaroos.Â
Courtney Sandell led off the inning with a double before Ashley Cantu singled and Sam Alm walked to load up the bases. Mileah McKelvy was hit by an 0-1 pitch to drive home the Bluejays' first run and Mikaela Pechar followed McKelvy's free pass with a four-pitch walk to plate Creighton's second run and cut its deficit to 3-2. Following a pitching change, Kiara Mills drove in the third run with a RBI groundout to short. Jayci Foster gave the Bluejays the lead and drove in two runs with a single. Sandell capped the scoring with a single, her second hit of the inning, to drive in Foster for the sixth Creighton run.
The Bluejays added to their advantage with a four-run fifth inning without recording a hit.Â
Following a lead-off strikeout, Victoria Alvarez laid down a bunt and reached on a throwing error. Kaitlynn Hunt drew a four-pitch walk to put runners at first and second before Sandell reached on a fielder's choice and an error allowed one run to score. McKelvy drove in her second run of the game via a bases loaded hit by pitch, and Pechar drew her second walk with the bases full of Bluejays. A wild pitch with the bases still loaded allowed the 10th Creighton run to cross home plate.Â
The final three runs of the fifth inning each came with two outs.
UMKC produced three hits and scored once during the bottom of the seventh to cut the final margin to six runs.
McKelvy, Pechar and Foster each paced the Bluejays with two RBIs, while Ashley Cantu reached base four times by going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and walked twice. Sandell also scored twice and tallied two hits.
South Dakota State scored once in the top of the first and four times during the fifth inning and shutout the Bluejays during Creighton's first game on Saturday.
The Jackrabbits led off the game with a four-pitch walk and later scored the first run of the game on an error.Â
Creighton loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning but a line out double play ended the Bluejays' early threat.
The Bluejays left a total of seven on base against SDSU and managed only three hits.Â

Freshman Kate Mullally made her first appearance in the circle as a Bluejay and retired the final seven hitters she faced. Mullally went 2.2 innings in relief and allowed one hit, one earned run, walked one and struck out another.Â
