College Park, Md. -- Junior reliever Jonah Smith tossed 3.2 innings of impressive relief to help Creighton Baseball slip past Maryland 5-3 on Saturday, March 23.
The win moved Creighton to 10-5 on the season, giving the Bluejays the series win over the Terrapins as Creighton took the series opener on Friday night. Maryland fell to 12-10 overall with the loss.
The Bluejays got on the board with two runs in the third as junior Isaac Collins drew a walk, stole second and scored on an RBI double from Parker Upton. Moments later the Bluejay two-hole hitter scored via an RBI single from junior Jake Holton.
Creighton's offense went back to work in the fifth as junior Will Robertson walked, Holton slapped a one-out single to right, then senior Jack Strunc squeezed home Robertson to push the Bluejay lead to 3-0.
Smith entered the game in the bottom of the sixth with Creighton holding a 3-0 edge. With two Terrapins on, the first Maryland hitter Smith faced knotted the game at 3-3 with a home run ove the wall in left-center field. Smith went on to hold Maryland scoreless for the remainder of the game to pick up the win (3-0), allowing one run on four hits in 3.2 innings.
The game remained tied at 3-3 until the eighth, when Creighton head coach Ed Servais pushed every correct button to manufacture a pair of runs. The inning began with a nine-pitch walk to Stunc. Junior Jordan Hovey followed with a sacrifice bunt, then junior Jason Allbery worked Creighton's second free pass of the frame. Servais called sophomore Evan Spry out of the dugout to pinch-hit. The Wisconsin native paid dividends with an RBI single to center. Maryland attempted to cut down Strunc at the dish, allowing Allbery and Spry to move to second and third. The following Bluejay hitter, Will Hanafan, plated Allbery with a well-placed squeeze bunt.
The Terrapins went quietly in the eighth, then Smith struck out a pair to preserve the win in the ninth. The final out of the game came with the bases full of Terps as Tommy Gardiner was called out on strikes on Smith's 70th pitch of the game.
Maryland reliever Mark DiLuia took the loss (0-1), allowing two runs on a pair of walks in one-third of an inning.
Offensively the Bluejays finished with six hits, three coming from Holton.
The Bluejays and Terps will conclude their three-game series on Sunday, March 24, with first-pitch set for 12:00 pm (CT).
Box Score Coming Soon.
